He is the last duke standing...the sole remaining bachelor of the three self-proclaimed Decadent Dukes. Yet, Davina MacCallum's reasons for searching out the handsome Duke of Brentworth have nothing to do with marriage. Scottish lands were unfairly confiscated from her family by the Crown and given to his. A reasonable man with vast holdings can surely part with one trivial estate, especially when Davina intends to put it to good use. Brentworth, however, is as difficult to persuade as he is to resist.

The Duke of Brentworth's discretion and steely control make him an enigma even to his best friends. Women especially find him inscrutable and unapproachable - but also compellingly magnetic. So, when Davina MacCallum shows no signs of being even mildly impressed by him, he is intrigued. Until he learns that her mission in London involves claims against his estate. Soon, the two of them are engaged in a contest that allows no compromise. When duty and desire collide, the best laid plans are about to take a scandalous turn - into the very heart of passion....

I like the story but the characters were a little bland for me. The premise was fine but I found it hard to feel connected to the characters.

Enjoyable

Listen to this book because Rosalyn Landor is such a pro and always does a great job, This would be mind numbingly boring if it were not for the narrator. There's slow burn and then there is glacial pace. I'm completely fine with laying track, plotting out a story but this is ridiculous. It isn't funny, it isn't sexy and the spice is non existent. Davina the female character is entitled, stupid and not very interesting. She spends the whole book berating the hero to relinquish his a portion of his land and an estate. She believes without any evidence 100 years prior the land belonged to her Scottish great grandfather. What's is it going to take to for one of these brilliant women writers to write a female a heroine who is not self rightious and entitled weirdo.

Why are the heroine's written so stupid?

Overall it was a good story. However..... I was expecting a story after the fashion of her previous novels and not one shaped after the style of Mary Balogh. Because of this I was disappointed and feel like I wasted my money. I can always purchase Mary Balogh if I want to read her but I don't expect it from Madeline Hunter. I will return the book.

Madeline Hunter not Mary Balogh

This story moves along at an even pace, and it's actually more realistic than many romance novels. That's also what keeps it from moving me in any big way, things continue on an even keel. It's a sweet story tho, I respect the heroine, her intelligence and straight forwardness. I like the hero, he's not too broody, angry or dark. He's reasonable, even with a dark past. You don't see that often.

Pleasant listen

We are introduced to the characters of Davina and Eric. We get to see their journey of enemies to one another to partners in solving her heritage claim, and finally embracement of their love to one another in the happily ever after. Thank you so much for the epilogue in this final series. I loved how you incorporated at first to book characters that ducks and Duchess, and how we found out about their children the heirs.

An incredible ending to the decadent Duke series!
