About this listen

Vampire hunter Anita Blake is no stranger to killing monsters. It’s part of her job as a Preternatural U.S. Marshal, after all. But even her experience isn’t enough to stop something that is bent on destroying everything—and everyone—she loves.

Anita Blake is engaged to Jean-Claude, the new vampire king of America. Humans think she’s gone over to the side of the monsters. The vampires fear that their new king has fallen under the spell of the most powerful necromancer in a thousand years.

In the midst of wedding preparations—including getting Edward, aka U.S. Marshal Ted Forrester, fitted as best man—Anita gets a call that the local police need her expertise at a brutal murder scene linked to a nationwide slaughter of vampires and humans, dubbed the Sunshine Murders.

But there is more than just a murderer to catch: an ancient evil has arrived in St. Louis to challenge Jean-Claude for his crown, his life, Anita, and all they hold dear. Even with Jean-Claude’s new powers as king and Anita’s necromancy, it isn’t enough; they must embrace their triumvirate or allow primeval darkness to spread across the country, possessing first the vampires and then the humans. Evil will triumph unless Jean-Claude and Anita can prove that love conquers all.

I am utterly disappointed!!!

I have waited over 2 years for the next book!! Reading and re-reading the full series just waiting! Now I get a book of back story and explaining what we already know. This is not a Japanese anime where it takes 5 episodes to complete one battle. If people have not read the whole series that is on them! And where is the ending!? I have to wait now for the battle to be over but instead of next week like an anime I have to wait months?!

Ugh, where is the conclusion?

I love these books. I pre-ordered this one and was so excited about it. I am underwhelmed.

Again it was more poly dynamics than story line. The main threat was never resolved!

It is like the story ended in the middle with the threat never resolved. The interpersonal issues were mostly resolved, while the big ugly threat was constantly ignored and then never resolved.

Skip it until the sequel

I am royally mad. This whole story is incomplete their was a criminal case never concluded. The big bad never concluded. It was nice to hear from past characters but the story is so incomplete that it takes place in a days time with nothing done. I figure it was a money grab and only half the book

Disappointed

It is a novella taking place in a hallway and half way through the book and there is no defined plot. The only book in this series I disliked.

Hmmm…. Where’s the rest of the story?

I loved the story. Yes the angsty self examination was too drawn out but that’s the beauty of the Anita series, the characters are just so human. No author can convey emotions like LKH can. Her writing style is so unique.

The story had threads that were started but not fleshed out -yet- but the point is that the 4th mark is complete now which sets up the next book beautifully.

Oh, I can’t wait for Anita’s morning to come. What is the big bad dragon gonna try to do?

I can’t wait for the next book. Hope it’s really really long! ;)

Smolder another amazing book!

It was so great to read an Anita Blake book again. I finished it in one day because I couldn’t put it down. The only issue I have with Laurell K Hamilton is her stories move so fast so you’re only reading about maybe a day or two in the life of Anita. I need her to get to the wedding already.

Another Great Anita Book

Finished this book in 1 day. L.K.H has done another fantastic job with Anita and her men. This is the 1st Anita audiobook I've listened too and I absolutely loved the performance. I loved how each man had they're own unique voice and tone. Definitely 5 stars all around. I can't wait for Slay in November! 2 Anita books in 1 year. I love it. ❤️

Good character development.

I love the characters so much. This book was definitely more of a set up for the next big bad of the series, but I really like that a lot of issues between characters were talked about. I do still hate Richard though. And Asher. I’m pretty sure that will be a forever feeling, though.

Good for a set up book

This is a book that’s an obvious setup for the next book coming out in November. I like that the story showed more of the daily part of Anita’s life, it’s a good book over all but I do feel the need for the next book. Lost of plot loops, things left undone. But still a good story.

big disappointment.

Really sad to see Hamilton writing from behind her polyamory pulpit again. Suckered Punch gave me hope for better story lines and less harem fantasy in future books but. alas, we're back to the "Anita sleeps with everyone and everyone who crosses her path wants to get in her pants". It's gotten old. it's not offensive, it's just boring. Unfortunately, even the actual plot can't overcome the polyamory preaching this time because it too is just a rehash of previous stories. new monster, new venue but nothing new in the telling.
