About this listen

Haley Rosewood's life has never been easy, especially not with a class-A jerk for a boss and a marketing job that barely pays her enough to provide a roof over her daughter's head and food for the table. Every day is a struggle, and the thought of being romantically involved with anyone is a dream she doesn't dare indulge.

Devon Carrington is the type of man to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need, and when he finds Haley struggling through a bad day, he does everything he can. In return, he asks that she help him pick out lottery numbers and tells her that if he wins, she gets half.

When the winning numbers are drawn and Devon and Haley learn that they have won, can the two of them put their one-night stand behind them and build something for the future? Find out in Sometimes You Win.

Sometimes You Win is part of the Sometimes series that includes three stories: Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose, and Sometimes You Play the Game.

Super sweet, single parent romance

Single mom Haley is stuck in a dead end job with an awful boss, but she keeps chugging on for the sake of her and her daughter. And because no one else is there to rescue her. On a particularly bad day she finds herself stranded. Enter Devon, a super sweet, caring, and attentive not-quite-stranger who lends a hand when most needed.

While the beginning drew me in quickly, the middle of the story felt a bit far fetched even for a romance novel. The conflict between Haley and Devon felt forced at times. Also, the end didn’t leave me satisfied. It wasn’t a true happily ever after for me. Overall, Sometimes You Win is an ultra sweet romance with a ton of heart. There’s plenty of sweet romance and plenty of swoon compliments of Devon. I’m hoping that there will be more in store for these characters since it is part of a series.

This was my first time listening to both Julie Walters and Gene Branson. While both of their narrations were good, they wasn’t great. Variation for the different characters was minimal. Pacing was great and their voices were pleasing to listen to, but that special something was missing to make it a five star narration.

Need the next one!

Stacy Eaton is such a wonderful author, every book I have listened to has been a gem. This one is no exception! Hayley and Devon finally meet after admiring each other from afar for a while. Hayley is a struggling single mom, and Devon is the knight in shining armor there to help her with her most horrible day. She is not one to take accept help easily, and although attracted to him is hestiant to get too close. After a huge misunderstanding, the two are separated, but you can feel the love and attraction is still there. When a life changing surprise brings them together, we can only hope it knocks sense into them and brings their relationship to the next level. But will it? And is their love strong enough to keep them together? I love this couple, the realism in their relationship is so easy to relate to. I can fully appreciate Hayley's stubbornness to accept help, and Devon's frustration to not be allowed to help her! It's a fun push pull feel, and I want the next book to see where life takes them.

This is my first narration by Gene Branson and Julie Walters. I enjoyed their two points for view and thought their pace was perfect for the story. I did find at times that it was hard to distinguish which character was speaking, but for the most part found the story to move well and be enjoyable.

Sometimes You Win

Sometimes You Win is book 1 in the Sometimes Series. It is the sweet love story of Haley and Devon. He is her knight in shining armor, and I love his character. Haley is likable but rather skittish and has trust issues. This is a nice beginning to their story, and I'm looking forward to listening to book 2. I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

What a great beginning!

I just loved the start of this book, it really drew me in. Haley is such an inspiring person, she works so hard to build a good life for herself and her daughter and I couldn't help but want her to succeed. Devon is the kind of man you want to meet, sweet and caring, strong and supportive.

The conflict in the middle of the story felt a bit forced, it took bad communication and misreading signals to a whole new level. I also didn't feel like this was resolved at the end of the book, it felt unfinished to me.

I really enjoyed listening to it and the narrator did a great job with the character voices and the pace and tone of the delivery.

A good story and a easy listen

This book is a little over 4 hours long. The story is good and flows well. Each chapter is read / written by the opposite main character. The switch back and worth made the four hours go by fast. I am going to listen to book two.

The narration was good. Both narrators did a good job. It was an easy listen. I will listen to both these narrators again.

Book 1 of 3 Haley & Devon

Haley and Devon have admired each other from afar for many months, and when Devon helps her on a terrible day she does not know what to think. Haley believes herself to know what she wants, but she is timid and overthinks everything. Happy for Now ending.
