About this listen

After the capture of Coruscant, the mighty heart of the New Republic, a stunned galaxy fears that nothing can stop the Yuuzhan Vong. Still, that crushing defeat produces one small miracle: Jacen Solo is alive. Yet he can scarcely imagine himself in stranger circumstances.

The young Jedi Knight is in the care of Vergere, a fascinating creature of mystery and power, her intentions hard to fathom, her cruelties rarely concealed. But this master of inscrutable arts has much to teach the young Jedi, for she holds the key to a new way to experience the Force, to take it to another level: dangerous, dazzling, perhaps deadly.

In the wrong hands, the tremendous energies of the Force can be devastating. And there are others watching Jacen's progress closely, waiting patiently for the moment when he will be ready for their own dire purposes. Now, all is in shadows. Yet whatever happens, whether Jacen's newfound mastery unleashes light or darkness, he will never be the same Jedi again.

Critic reviews

"A story centering on Jacen Solo, son of Han and Leia Solo. Listeners not familiar with the series will be lost in the midst of the New Republic's long-standing war with the Yuuzhan Vong and other unfamiliar characters, but fans of the series will be delighted. Jonathan Davis, the narrator of many Star Wars audios, continues to do a fine job voicing each character and creating a sense of suspense....Davis's skill is combined with the liberal use of sound effects and John Williams' famous score to make a nearly cinematic listening experience." There’s a universality to the Star Wars franchise, a world so sprawling that no matter who you are, you’re bound to find something—an adventure, a moment, a character—that resonates with you. And if you were to ask any fan, they’d likely be able to recount a memory directly tied to the series. On a 2021 journey from the East Coast to the Outer Rim, one Audible editor and Star Wars superfan saw all of her wildest, most interstellar dreams become reality.

I love listening to the books from Audible especially Star Wars books.I found that this book had different style and the reader made the story a pleasure to listen to as well as the sound effects witch added even even more realism. I found myself totally part of the story!

A new and different Star Wars story!

My only problem is that it is slightly abridged. The music production is spot on. Every moment of the narration rings true to how I read the book in my head.

This is my favorite book

Awesome story. Great voice acting. The background sound and music production was also killer. Great work!

I’m like: wow

Abridged book aside, this is one of the best novels in the Expanded Universe. Jacen’s journey sees him explore the mysteries of the Force and uncover secrets of the Yuuzhan Vong. Along the way he is guided by a former Jedi and a legend is born in a final sacrifice. Read it.

Vergere and Jacen

I’ve listened to all the legacy era and fate of the Jedi series including the dark nest trilogy. I just re-listened to the fate of the Jedi series recently after some of the X-Wing series and was hearing references to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion and subsequently the war but never listened to any of the New Jedi order books save Vector Prime which was a good book but I never had a chance to listen to all the other books. So I am listening to them now. I have to say this one is the best one by far. Outstanding. I was riveted hanging on ever chapter. And even though I already knew Ganner Rhysode was going to die on a hill of bodies it was still sad to see. And after hearing so much about Vergere it was really awesome to see how she shaped Jacen Solo into becoming Darth Caedus.

Best one so far.

This is by far my favorite book in The New Jedi Order series. This is already one of the most fun series I've read, but this book definitely stands out among the rest. This book took me from not really caring about Jacen Solo to making him one of my top two characters, post-Episode VI. Absolutely worth a read. If you know the context of the earlier books in this series, then it takes everything to a whole new level. This series is worth reading just to get to this book. And Jonathan Davis is one of the best in the business. A narrator can make or break a book. In this case, his voice performance is the whipped cream and cherry on top of an already stellar dessert.

Best book in the series

This is not one of the best novels in this series. This book has a character that is really annoying, but it does have a strong ending.

An ok novel.

Half of the book was kind of weird, but it did pick up in the second half.
