About this listen

Twenty-one years after the Battle of Endor, the New Republic will face an even darker enemy....

More than two decades after the heroes of the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star and broke the power of the Emperor, the New Republic has struggled to maintain peace and prosperity among the peoples of the galaxy. But unrest has begun to spread and threatens to destroy the Republic’s tenuous reign.

Into this volatile atmosphere comes Nom Anor, a charismatic firebrand who heats passions to the boiling point, sowing seeds of dissent for his own dark motives. And as the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles, a new threat surfaces from beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim - an enemy bearing weapons and technology unlike anything New Republic scientists have ever seen.

Suddenly, Luke Skywalker; his wife, Mara; Han Solo; Leia Organa Solo; and Chewbacca - along with the Solo children - are thrust again into battle, to defend the freedom so many have fought and died for. But this time, the power of the Force itself may not be enough....

There’s a universality to the Star Wars franchise, a world so sprawling that no matter who you are, you’re bound to find something—an adventure, a moment, a character—that resonates with you. And if you were to ask any fan, they’d likely be able to recount a memory directly tied to the series. On a 2021 journey from the East Coast to the Outer Rim, one Audible editor and Star Wars superfan saw all of her wildest, most interstellar dreams become reality.

The story is great and emotionally compelling. A new antagonist in the tale of Star Wars. Unfortunately, the narrator is awkward and distracting and the story is left with gaping plot holes due to the abridged version of this book. I wish there was an unabridged version of this book on Audible, but alas..

Good story, but...

The story was fine, the narrator was okay. Bring abridged rushed the story and often the sound effects were just static and much louder than the narrator so you could barely hear the guy.

The sound effects

the narration outside of dialogue and the story are fantastic. however, the narrator doesn't even try to impersonates the characters we know and love. When lando sounds like a 90 year old white dude, you have a problem...

great story. fine narration. poor impersonations

I confess that I have been avoiding abridged audible like the plague. In part because I couldn’t imagine abridged being nearly as good as the full story, but also because I think that Anthony Heald is just so awful at narrating! If you are used to Marc Thompson or Jonathan Davis, or just about anyone else, set your expectation to zero on the narrator and put your money on the story. The story, is well done. If bad narrator is an insurmountable mountain for you.....sorry. You may not make it.

As to the story..I read the New Jedi Order series more then once as a kid. Incredible series, though Vector prime was always the book that I found most difficult to get through because it moved so slowly compared to the average Star Wars novel. It effectively sets up all the moving pieces and by nature is pretty slow.
This abridged version, however, does a pretty good job of giving the condensed version, focusing on the main plot points pretty smoothly and not feeling overly rushed. It is abridged, but it was good.

Good story marred by bad narration

Nome Anure be like:"Omae wa mo shindiru!"
Anakin blows up a whole planet. 10/10

EVIL INVADERS!

I really like that the Solo children are realizing their potential in the force.

I was absolutely shocked by the death of Chewbaca and at the same time disappointed at Han's reaction towards his son.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would, if my friend was a star wars audiobook junky who ran out of unabridged star wars books to enjoy

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

It needs to be redone with a production like that of the newer stuff, Heir of the Empire, Legacy of the Jedi or Fate of the Jedi

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Chewy's death

Any additional comments?

It seems like a great story that absolutely needed to be unabridged and the production similar to that of the newer stuff and narrated by Marc Thompson. For the desperate Star Wars fan, it had to do.

Not bad but..

after listening to the Thrawn Trilogy, read by Mark Thompson, this guy seems weak. it is almost like he isn't a star wars fan.

bad reading

I would have preferred to have an unabridged version over this abbreviated version. In audio books longer is always better than shorter. This shortened versions meant for the old public radio broadcast should be replaced by the unabridged version in all cases.

length

Excellent story, too short; kinda remember the paper back book being much longer.

The narrator shouldn’t be allowed to speak, cringe beyond words.

Spoiler: The Death of an Iconic Star Wars Character deserved better; far better than the excrement that K.K. Defiled our childhood dreams and hopes with… F!!! K.K.!!!

Don’t waste your $, Buy the paper book
