Publisher's summary

The intrepid spies, pilots, and sharpshooters of Wraith Squadron are back in an all-new Star Wars adventure, which transpires just after the events of the Fate of the Jedi series!

Three decades have passed since Wraith Squadron carried out its last mission. Taking on the most dangerous and daring operations, the rogues and misfits of the elite X-Wing unit became legends of the Rebellion and the Second Galactic Civil War, before breaking up and going their separate ways. Now their singular skills are back in vital demand - for a tailor-made Wraith Squadron mission.

A powerful general in the Galactic Alliance Army, once renowned for his valor, is suspected of participating in the infamous Lecersen Conspiracy, which nearly toppled the Alliance back into the merciless hands of the Empire. With orders to expose and apprehend the traitor - and license to do so by any and all means - the Wraiths will become thieves, pirates, impostors, forgers...and targets, as they put their guts, their guns, and their riskiest game plan to the test against the most lethal of adversaries.

What can I say? I approve!

I read these books as a teen and loved immersing myself in the stories. Reading about Runt, Piggy, Wedge and the rest was a great spark for my desire to do something meaningful. Now, with Mercy Kill, Allston launches the story anew. In a period when so many are rebooting our entertainment sources (often in failure), Allston picked up the story and carries it forward. There is no "rebooting" only a recharging. I love the step taken and look forward to more in the future!

very little to do with actual x-wings

not a bad book, just very little to do with actual x-wings. I have to imagine I would have enjoyed this book more having read more from this series.

wonderful story and narration

very sorry that aaron allston passed away, and that the star wars legends novels were cancelled by disney. the new disney authorized books are not very good. i dont understand why all the talented authors of the Legends and Old Republic era books cant continue to write them, those are the real star wars universe and have been since the original movies.

Mission: Impossible, Star Wars style

What did you like best about Star Wars: X-Wing: Mercy Kill? What did you like least?

The Mission: Impossible/caper movie feel of the book.

If you’ve listened to books by Aaron Allston before, how does this one compare?

It's pretty much the level of quality I came to expect from Allston.

Which scene was your favorite?

Voort's The reminiscing scene from the Yuuzhan Vong War.

Did Star Wars: X-Wing: Mercy Kill inspire you to do anything?

To read more Star Wars!

little disorienting

it took a few runs threw this to get a handle in this since i have not read the series before this. More my fault as I just saw the star wars xwing and assumed it was a move ahead on the old series. Still this was a good book and I really enjoyed it... now I'll just go ahead and find the books in the middle to fill the gaps.

really hope they keep releasing these books un abridged as the really short one's do the stories justice.

This is a great book

My title says it. The performance was great, I love the long unabridged Star Wars. Keep doing it!

That's Good Star Wars

I have long enjoyed the Wraith Squadron antics, and they'll never get old no matter how many times I've read or listened to these books. I like the touch of bringing in the next generation of Wraiths to compliment some of the veterans in this one, too. I like the addition of the sound effects.... birdsong and traffic sounds when they're outside, the beeps and whir of machinery on a ship, the chatter of people in the background. Hearing the traditional Star Wars music adds a great ambiance, too, without overpowering the narration. I did not enjoy the animosity between Vort/Piggy and the Vong character, but it was understandable and they did evolve their relationship over the course of the book. Face Loran was awesome, as always.

Ended up being better than reading it.

What did you love best about Star Wars: X-Wing: Mercy Kill?

The Humor.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Face - because he sounded like Captain Kirk

What does Marc Thompson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Marc's vocal inflections really sold the levity in the book. I started reading it an then listened a little and it was a totally different feel. So much of Star Wars is so serious and emotional, that I started the reading with the same approach. It's a good thing that I tried the Whispersync thing for audio! I've never been interested in anything rogue Squadron but I really like Marc Thompson, so I tried it. I glad because I was laughing out loud a lot. Now when I go back someday and read it, I'll know what the mood of the book is lighter.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh definitely

Any additional comments?

This book is like reading/listening to NCIS LA, The A Team, Sneakers (the movie), Mission impossible and GI Joe. It's very entertaining and of course doesn't take itself too seriously. Let me tell yo just this, the main character is a Gamorrean who speaks English and has been modified by experiments so he has a genius intellect and also can dance like a Chippendale. There, nuff said? I don't think there is a real lightsaber in the whole book. You'd have to know some things about the FOTJ series to totally get the plot though, the Lecersen conspiracy for instance, and the overall EU historical context.

Well, “Mercy Kill” is what I’m asking for after this read..

I really wanted to like this book.. Wraith Squadron was one of my top favorite books of all the EU.

But this book just fell flat at almost every turn, I liked the tension between Voort and Scut and the resolution between them. And the way Piggy found his resolve in the end.

There were some decent jokes here and there which I enjoyed, but overall I felt like I had to force myself to finish… and just so happened to on the anniversary of Aaron Allston’s passing.

I am so grateful to AA and all the books he has written for Star Wars, this was the last book of his that I had not read. RIP, and thank you for all the adventures, friend!
