About this listen

Magic. Steel. Blood. Victory.

The Earth’s navy is left drifting among the stars as Nyctus ships swarm, their purpose unknown as they continue their advance, burning one system after another. Humanity's extinction seems inevitable. But on one of the forgotten worlds, a boy is left behind, and he holds a talent unlike anything the galaxy has ever known.

Thorn Stellers is a mage, trained to lead and fight. With a renegade division of warriors at his side, and with weapons far different from those of old Earth, Thorn has a chance at standing up to humanity's enemies. For these mage-soldiers, armed with power that had once been thought the stuff of legend, the outcome is no longer certain.

Each Starcaster has a talent - except for Thorn, who has many. With his childhood companion Kira Wixcombe, he’ll confront a threat from beyond the stars, meeting them in the darkness with a light born of magic...and a lust for revenge.

Is his power enough? Or is Earth a forgotten memory, lost forever to history?

Interesting story

Overarching story is good. I just wish they had a little more nitty-gritty details filled in. A lot of the facts that I was looking forward to about magic weren’t addressed. For example, they talk about the different types of magic people have, but they never give us a complete list down of each magical type in what it supposed to do. We’re just supposed to pick it up from context in the story. However, when it comes to the actual story, the authors did a really good job. I find the characters very compelling along with all the other parts of the story. You really see character development in the main character. Overall, a really good story, but they really don’t go into much detail about the magic

It's great story, a bit confusing at first but..

The story is excellent the performance is outstanding. There's a lot of jumping around in the beginning it gets a little confusing about who is important and who is not BUT Hang in there,!!!! because it's a great story!

Very intriguing story

Read some of the reviews. I have to agree with the person who said the detractors probably hadn’t even listened to the book. To was well written and always held my attention. I will get the second book when I complete some other reads.

Great Find!

Let's be honest, we are all reluctant to put our credits on the untried and untested. This title is one of Audible's included in membership books at time of review, without which I would not have discovered it. Having done so, I'm delighted that this excellently read, solid science novel has introduced me to the author and series.

Another Good Series

When Maggert & Chaney write a book, you can usually depend on it being a very good, if not great story!! That is true with the first book of this series! The interesting thing here is the combination of fantasy and sci fi!! You have a mage/wizard that is working hard jobs on a backwater planet that is rescued by a childhood friend - for selfish reasons. The childhood friend is with the space fleet battling another murderous invasion of an alien species - of course, many sci fi titles use this premise, BUT what the writers do with it! In this case, Maggert & Chaney do a really good job with it! The story line is believable within the confines of the premise! The characters are well defined - and there is some loss throughout the book. They don't play it safe with all of their characters!! I would highly recommend this book - and I am planning on buying the other two books in the series!!!

New view on magic and space

Enjoyed this audiobook. Fun look at how the mind will also grow when we finally get to space.

I’ve passing this up many times, so glad I finally listened.

I have passed this book up many times, thinking it just wasn’t for me. It’s not what I’m in to, but I decided to listen and I’m hooked. It’s not what I thought it was going to be…it’s much more of a military, traditional space marines story, than a fantasy/magic story. I will be continuing through the series.
