About this listen

Survival of the fittest becomes harsh reality in the blink of an eye.

Greg Healy isn’t fooled - this hunting trip is designed to get Greg and his father to end their feud. Not even Greg’s teenage daughter or his father’s hunting buddies along for the ride will be enough of a buffer to heal the rift of long-standing resentments.

They've barely been dropped off in the remote Canadian wilderness when they discover their new equipment is dead with no explanation. Now they’ll have to rely on each other and resort to Old West ingenuity to find their way home - before the hunter becomes the hunted.

For 17-year-old Darryl Healy, things aren’t much easier on his grandparents’ cattle ranch. When the lights go out after a nationwide cyberattack, frightening responsibilities fall squarely on Darryl’s unproven shoulders as a power-hungry politician is determined to confiscate the ranch’s resources - by any means necessary.

Danger and death await the Healy family as each group attempts to navigate this terrifying new post-apocalyptic world while the vast wilderness separates them. And in order to survive the nightmare, a deal with the devil might be their only saving grace.

If you love post-apocalyptic with suspense, intrigue, and mystery, then this book is for you.

Great book. Fantastic narration

The dystopian genre has a new hero. This book was very good. The story is great and kept me entertained, the narration was outstanding. It’s a great listen. My only complaint was that it’s kind of short, but that’s why they do a series. Highly recommended. I did receive this title for free in exchange for an honest review and believe me, I’m being honest.

EMP: solar or nuke?

A camping/hunting trip into Canada’s Northwest Territories turns into a nightmare. Greg Healy, his father Tuck, his daughter Emma, along with two of his hunting friends Tommy and Eustace, helicopter into the Canadian Wilderness on a hunting trip. Greg, an environmental lawyer, had another covert reason for the trip. The trip turns sour when what appears to be an EMP shuts down all their technology. Encountering a grumpy bear adds to their dismay. Following a pipeline to a weigh station brings hope but once again, the situation goes bad. Once again, they head out for home. Will they all make it? Back at Greg’s parent’s home; a ranch in northwestern Washington State near Ferndale, the situation for Greg’s mother Marion, his wife Tabitha, and his son Darryl, is not much better. They have to deal with a small community on the verge of panic, and a psychotic Mayor Filmore who has decided to take over, collecting all supplies by any means necessary. Will they survive the Mayor’s scheme? The story is interesting, with a great cast of characters, authentic circumstances, with tension and events that keep you listening. I enjoyed this first volume of a new series and look forward to the next book. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Unimaginative, stereotypical of the genre

This story is stereotypical of the genre. It's not very imaginative. And there's not enough attention paid to detail. I especially don't like the ending, the epilog to be specific. The story could have ended quite nicely with the last chapter, omitting the epilog altogether.

Andrew Tell's narration is quite acceptable. His character voices suit their respective characters.

I just wish the story weren't so trite and contrived.

Believable situations and invested characters

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The situations were believable and no super soldiering. The characters were developed and some situations even brought tears, from sawdust of course, to my eyes. Overall a great read/listen and I can't wait to start book #2!

Great story

I’m never disappointed in anything Grace puts out! She is amazing and all of her stories and characters are believable. Some are also relatable while others are loathsome. She never fails to pull on your emotions.
The kids are my favorite part of this story. I love them. Such strong and capable kids!
Narration by Andrew Tell was perfect as alway!

Decent premise, but the performance and dialogue of the book was absolutely miserable

The premise of this post apocalyptic story was pretty good and I wanted to like it, but I could not get past the absolutely miserable dialogue that the author wrote. Absolutely no one in the world talks like that and it really just took me out of the moment. The performance was really bad to the voices were absolutely ridiculous. Kind of like cartoon voices. Definitely no R.C. Bray

Holy smokes this was bad. Horrible storyline, horrible narration.

This was one of the worst books I have ever listened to. The narrator was so over-dramatic, the story was ridiculous!!!
