About this listen

Jake Semple is notorious. Rumor has it he burned down his old school and got kicked out of every school in his home state.

Only one place will take him now, and that's a home school run by the Applewhites, a chaotic and hilarious family of artists. The only one who doesn't fit the Applewhite mold is E.D., a smart, sensible girl who immediately clashes with the unruly Jake.

Jake thinks surviving this one will be a breeze...but is he really as tough or as bad as he seems?

Critic reviews

"Robert Sean Leonard misses not a beat as he rolls along with this free-flowing family. Even as the crises reach a crescendo, Leonard's characterizations add dimension to the production. Don't miss this recording!" (AudioFile)

"Clever, clever. Tolan has pulled off something special here." (Booklist)

"Laugh-out-loud novel.... Running beneath the narrative that gently pokes fun at everything from sculpture to TV documentaries, though, is also the story of a boy allowing himself to belong and begin to discover his own potential." (School Library Journal)

My12 year old girls and I think this book was excellent. The story is excellent as is the narrator. We have all listened to this numerous times (daughter says more like a gazillion). In fact when looking for new audio books for a recent road trip we all agreed that if we could just find another book as good as this one we'd all be happy.

We can't wait until her next book is on audible! Yippie!!!!

Excellent! This is our most replayed audio book

I know this is kinda weird BUT… I TOTALLY ship E.D. and Jake. Like, at first it was ‘cause they were complete opposites and I was doing it for fun but, when Jake started to change it was practically impossible to miss, like, if you couldn’t see that they belong together then sorry but wow, oof😅. Well 10/10 🤩 but I kinda wish we got to know some of the cast for the play a little more. But, that’s the only mid thing that I have to say and you should totally read or listen to this book!💯

I love it❣️

If you're teaching this along with the print novel, be aware that the chapters of the book to not match with chapters in the audiobook. This audiobook is divided into 8 chapters, but there are 30 chapters in the book. I had to manually save a bookmark at the end of every chapter to make it work for our in-class readings. Quite a pain and a waste of time! Otherwise, the reader is good, and the story is solid.

I loved the performance the reader did an amazing job with the voices and everything in the book he really just embraced all the characters and gave a scene in my mind of what the book my look like in real life.

Same as in the title box. But I didn’t like the way music played after every chapter. To me it ruined the flow of the story

I like the way the voice actor was able to bring the story to life.
