About this listen
‘Tense, twisty, emotional and gripping. Will definitely be reading more from Matilda Darke and this gets a huge 5 stars from me!’ Angela Marsons
‘Matilda Darke is an excellent character’ BA Paris
A TEAM TORN APART
Nine months ago DCI Matilda Darke survived a bullet to the head. The brutal attack claimed dozens of lives, including those she loved most, and the nightmares still plague her every waking thought.
A MEMORY SHE’D RATHER FORGET
Now, she’s ready to get back on the job. But a new terror awaits. A woman is found murdered and her wounds look eerily similar to several cold cases. Desperate to find a lead, DCI Darke and her team must face a terrifying truth: a serial killer is on the loose in Sheffield.
A THREAT CLOSE TO HOME
Matilda has led countless murder investigations before but the lingering emotional scars from her ordeal and the uneasiness within her once-tight team have left tensions high. As the body count rises, Matilda realises that this might just be where it all ends.
The brand new instalment in the DCI Matilda Darke series will leave you on the edge of your seat. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Kathy Reichs and Peter James.
‘Had me in tears at one point. Brilliant, non-stop stuff. Feel like I’ve been through some sort of psychological bombardment. Exhausted. Terrific’ John Barlow, author of Right to Kill

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Critic reviews
‘A tense, nail-biting story with a truly twisted ending’ Katerina Diamond
“An established master of the serial killer novel takes us on another dangerous journey through the streets of Sheffield. Watch out for those twists – you won't see them coming!” Stephen Booth
‘A gritty and atmospheric thriller with more twists and turns than a hangman's knot. I loved it’ Matt Hilton
‘Solid storytelling and great unravelling of plot. Michael Wood ups the pace as the noose tightens’ Rachel Sargeant
‘Taut, twisting and sharp as a blade, The Hangman’s Hold wrong-footed me at every, devious turn’ Chris Whitaker
'Wood hit the ground running with For Reasons Unknown, first in the DCI Matilda Darke series. In the fourth instalment, The Hangman's Hold, he picks up the pace again with a twisting plot that races to a nail-biting finish’ Chris Simms
‘Bites into you like the rough twine of a hangman’s noose and refuses to let go. Tautly plotted, brilliantly realised, this is further proof that Michael Wood is only going to get better and better. The Hangman’s Hold is going to be big…’ Neil Broadfoot
Praise for Michael Wood:
‘You can count on Michael Wood to deliver a deliciously twisted and intriguing plot, leading to a surprise ending by a likeable and very real protagonist, Matilda Darke’ Yrsa Sigurdardottir
‘She is the perfect heroine’ Elly Griffiths
‘A pitch-black concept, tightly delivered and played at exhilarating pace’ Paul Finch
‘Crackling dialogue, dark wit and an exciting ending. Recommended if you liked Happy Valley’ Mark Edwards
‘DCI Matilda Darke is going places’ James Oswald
‘A compelling, addictive read, it’s hard to put down. I really enjoyed getting to know DCI Matilda Darke. She's strong character with real depth’ Robert Bryndza, bestselling author of THE GIRL IN THE ICE
‘A beautifully written book with a dark heart and a secret that impacts on generations’ Sarah Ward

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Bravo Mister Wood!
Wow… Excellent continuation of Matilda’s story… Excellent narration from Stephanie Beattie. I had to scoop my jaw off of the floor several times and shed a few tears as well…. I was absolutely glued to this book (or headphones) beginning to end. One of my favorite listens this year.

it just keeps getting worse
Why is it that Matilda and her team don't understand the concept of calling for backup? "There's someone dangerous I need to interview, so I'll just swing by alone on my way home." Matilda and her team seem to spend more of their time getting in their own way than actually solving crimes. Sometimes, it's like watching The Keystone Cops, but not as funny. As for Matilda, she belongs to the British detective genre of very scewed up women detectives but much more dysfunctional. I've never seen a character with such a run of bad luck, much if it self-inflicted. She is surrounded by people who betray her or love her, and a number die around her. I'm at a loss as to how she's kept her job, especially now that she can't even drive. I wish Matilda luck, but I don't think she'll find any. I'm done.

Great continuation of the Matilda Drake series
Can't wait for the next in the series - suspense until the end. Micheal Wood set up set up the ending ready for the next book !
Excellent reader, got the accents correct and the characters were distinguishable from her tone of voice. Hope she performs the next one.

Another thrilling installment in the series
Although the hits keep coming . . .
I have to say, I was shellshocked after book 8 and was relieved by certain aspects of the storyline, but very saddened by others. Without giving anything away.

Bloody brilliant! Love my British detective series!
DCI Matilda Darke has always been a favorite of mine. Michael Wood’s series continues with Book 8 and is, as always, a spectacular thriller! Narration by Stephanie Beattie, with her precise vocal skills is, as always, perfect. “Survivor’s Guilt” gripped me from beginning, keeping me addicted from the start to the jaw-dropping ending I never saw coming… WOW! Both Wood and Beattie work successfully together as they bring this suspenseful, complexellent whodunnit to vivid life. I have the entire Matilda Darke series and I look forward to Book 9. Epic, I say! EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!

Most Incompetent DCI ever
Matilda is mentally incapacitated. She can’t perform her job and her incompetence gets people killed and destroys lives. Even though her supervisors won’t fire her, I will. I’ll never read or listen to another book with Matilda.
