About this listen
A journalist channels her ice cream obsession, scouring the United States for the best artisanal brands and delving into the surprising history of ice cream and frozen treats in America.
For Amy Ettinger, ice cream is not just a delicious snack but a circumstance and a time of year - frozen forever in memory. As the youngest child and only girl, ice cream embodied unstructured summers, freedom from the tyranny of her classmates, and a comforting escape from her chaotic, demanding family.
Now as an adult and journalist, her love of ice cream has led to a fascinating journey to understand ice cream's evolution and enduring power, complete with insight into the surprising history behind America's early obsession with ice cream and her experience in an immersive ice cream boot camp to learn from the masters. From a visit to the one place in the United States that makes real frozen custard in a mammoth machine known as the Iron Lung, to the vicious competition among small ice cream makers and the turf wars among ice cream trucks, to extreme flavors like foie gras and oyster, Ettinger encounters larger-than-life characters and uncovers what's really behind America's favorite frozen treats.
Sweet Spot is a fun and spirited exploration of a treat Americans can't get enough of - one that transports us back to our childhoods and will have you walking to the nearest shop for a cone.
Includes bonus PDF with recipes.

Story
What if achieving your professional dreams comes at too high a personal cost? That’s what screenwriter Patty Lin started to ask herself after years in the cutthroat TV industry. One minute she was a tourist, begging her way into the audience of Late Night with David Letterman. Just a few years later, she was an insider who—through relentless hard work and sacrifice—had earned a seat in the writers’ rooms of the hottest TV shows of all time.

Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Story
To many, our most shocking political crises appear unprecedented—un-American, even. But they are not, writes The Atlantic’s Adam Serwer in this prescient essay collection, which dissects the most devastating moments in recent memory to reveal deeply entrenched dynamics, patterns as old as the country itself. The January 6 insurrection, anti-immigrant sentiment, and American authoritarianism all have historic roots that explain their continued power with or without President Donald Trump—a fact borne out by what has happened since his departure from the White House.

If a piece of individually wrapped cheese retains its shape, color, and texture for years, what does it say about the food we eat and feed our children? Former New York Times reporter and mother Melanie Warner decided to explore that question when she observed the phenomenon of the indestructible cheese. She began an investigative journey that takes her to research labs, food science departments, and factories around the country. What she discovered provides a rare, eye-opening - and sometimes disturbing - account of what we're really eating.

"[Narrator Kathleen] McInerney is a great choice to recount the author's lifelong love affair with the delectable frozen treat. She clearly and expressively covers the varied topics.... McInerney's feminine, expressive voice conveys Ettinger's enthusiasm for her subject while also providing convincing renderings of the quirky characters she meets on her journey." (AudioFile)

Ettinger piles on double and triple scoops of fun information that offers literary deliciousness for ice cream lovers everywhere.” (Shelf Awareness)

Story
Straightforward and opinionated, Short Course in Beer is designed to turn the novice beer lover into an expert imbiber and the casual drinker into an enthusiast. Readers will come to understand the beauty of beer and the sources of its flavor, as well as learn which beers are worth our time and which are not. With tongue in cheek, the author examines beer's historical connections to the Crusades, the Hundred Years' War, and modern-day soccer riots. He talks frankly (and joyfully) about the effects of alcohol on the body and brain, he defends beer from its enemies, and ushers it out of the frat house and into the dining room.

So pull up a barstool and raise a glass to 5,000 years of fermented magic.

Impeccably researched, Hippie Food chronicles how the longhairs, revolutionaries, and back-to-the-landers rejected the square establishment of President Richard Nixon's America and turned to a more idealistic and wholesome communal way of life and food.

But are we at last developing a food culture or are we just going through the motions? Eating for England is an entertaining, detailed, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek observation of the British and their food, their cooking, their eating, and how they behave in restaurants.

Story
If a piece of individually wrapped cheese retains its shape, color, and texture for years, what does it say about the food we eat and feed our children? Former New York Times reporter and mother Melanie Warner decided to explore that question when she observed the phenomenon of the indestructible cheese. She began an investigative journey that takes her to research labs, food science departments, and factories around the country. What she discovered provides a rare, eye-opening - and sometimes disturbing - account of what we're really eating.

Interesting stories and great research
Learned a lot about the ice cream industry and the drama that went on in the business. I now look at a scoop of ice cream differently, thinking of it more than just as a dessert. Loved the fact that author added her personal anecdotes to the ice cream stories.

What a treat!
Very much enjoyed this book. Amy's journey for ice cream was both refreshing and insightful. I was pleasantly surprised by the numerous historical additions she wonderfully incorporated in her story telling.
I'm looking forward to making some small journeys with my family to try out some of the spots she visited. Thank you Amy for perusing your passion for all things ice cream and for sharing!

Left me Cold
I was hoping for an ice cream adventure but this was a memoir by a mean girl. Too much about her own experience which was much ado about nothing. She clearly didn't take off her sunglasses when she visited Milwaukee or she would have discovered more beauty and great ice cream in addition to the custard. Her superficial presentation of my own foodie backyard made me doubt her analysis of others. Also, narrators need to know how to pronounce people's names. Bud Selig was the Commissioner of Baseball! His name is pronounced like see not sell. Even Gilles Custard was mispronounced. If you want an ice cream adventure talk to local foodies and leave this book on the shelf.
