About this listen
Tales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of 48, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in Los Angeles to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986, she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita's example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.

What’s stopping us all from traveling more? The confusion of buying airfare - not knowing when to book, where to buy, or what to pay. Take More Vacations is the guidebook for anyone hoping to turn one annual vacation into three.

His wife, Traca, was all in favor of it; his kids, especially his 14-year-old daughter, were strongly opposed. Wide-Open World is the totally engaging, bluntly honest story of the Marshall family's life-changing adventure.

Before men ruled the earth, there were wolves. Once abundant in North America, these majestic creatures were hunted to near extinction in the lower 48 states by the 1920s. But in recent decades, conservationists have brought wolves back to the Rockies, igniting a battle over the very soul of the West. With novelistic detail, Nate Blakeslee tells the gripping story of one of these wolves, O-Six, a charismatic alpha female named for the year of her birth.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

For the first 13 years of her life, Flor Edwards grew up in the Children of God. The group's nomadic existence was based on the belief that, as God's chosen people, they would be saved in the impending apocalypse that would envelop the rest of the world in 1993. Flor would be 13 years old. The group's charismatic leader, Father David, kept the family on the move, from Los Angeles to Bangkok to Chicago, where they would eventually disband, leaving Flor to make sense of the foreign world of mainstream society around her.

One day, not so very many years ago, a small peasant boy was chosen to study ballet at the Beijing Dance Academy. His mother urged him to take this chance of a lifetime. But Li was only eleven years old and he was scared and lonely, pushed away from all that he had ever known and loved. He hated the strict training routines and the strange place he had been brought to. All he wanted to do was go home - to his mother, father, and six brothers, to his own small village. But soon Li realised that his mother was right. He had the chance to do something special with his life - and he never turned back.

In Cambodia in the 1960s, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge declared war on their own people, enslaving and slaughtering anybody who disagreed with them. Sichan Siv knew he would soon be a target - ending up, perhaps, as one of the millions of anonymous human skeletons buried in his nation's Killing Fields - so he heeded his mother's pleas and ran. Captured and forced to perform slave labor, Siv feared that he'd be worked to death or killed. But he never abandoned hope or his improbable dream of freedom - a dream that liberated him.

Fearless and funny, Pisani shares her deck space with pigs and cows, bunks down in a sulfurous volcano, and takes tea with a corpse. Along the way, she observes Big Men with child brides, debates corruption and cannibalism, and ponders "sticky" traditions that cannot be erased.

A year and a half into our marriage, I found out my husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old for six months. I filed for divorce and left. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself.

Amazing story, lovingly told
I’ve read this book several times, and enjoyed hearing it read by the author even more. She has changed my life and my daughter’s as well. We’ve always been avid travelers, but her perspective and attentiveness to people have given us a deeper appreciation of the places we’ve gone and will go. Rita is such a joy I consider her a friend even though I’ve never met her.

What an inspiring read!
Gelman's book speaks to the possibilities for building bridges instead of walls. Should be required reading for our government leaders. The audible version is especially good because we hear the writer's voice in a way we can hear how approachable she is. I highly recommend this book to others. I guess I am an armchair traveler who will tell potential readers that your life will be enriched by reading Tales of a Female Nomad!

Inspirational
If you like “Eat, Pray, Love” you will loooove Rita’s book and the reading of it!
I felt that I was experiencing her journey with her and became more and more courageous with her as the book progressed.
Rita shows that you can live a different kind of life. A life full of eye and heart opening moments if your soul is open to it. She looks for and has experienced cultures in a way that people usually open up to her, but if they don’t she is not personally offended.
If you are a person who loves all the goodness you know people have inside them and exploring diverse people and cultures, please listen to her book and enjoy how brave she is to live an open, accepting and experiential life!
Thank you for taking me with you Rita!!

Interesting, educational and very engaging!
If you like to travel and experience new cultures, you will thoroughly enjoy reading of Rita's stories of her experiences in different countries and cultures... on a personal basis because she traveled and stayed with individuals all over the world! Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Israel, Bali, Indonesia and Thailand... are a few of those she visited. She breaks down the walls between Americans and the rest of the world. She recommends travel for all to help us connect with, and understand better, those who are different from ourselves. This book made me want to meet... and travel with her!
