Publisher's summary

In an apocalypse, there is definitely a beginning where mistakes are made and the seeds of evil are allowed to sprout and take shape. However, an end is not so certain. Once an apocalypse occurs, not even death is certain. Sometimes, death is only the beginning.

At first light that morning, Dr. Lee steps into the Walton facility on the first day of human trials and can barely contain her excitement. The labs are brand spanking new and everything is sharp and clean. They've been built to her specifications and are a scientist's dream. It's where cancer is going to be cured once and for all.

By midnight, it's a place of fire, of blood, and of death - a death that, like the apocalypse, is seemingly never ending.

A zombie tale

This is a good warm up to Meredith’s the apocalypse series. Although the two have nothing to do with one another. I have to say that using perspective of the infected is an interesting twist that I just wasn’t sure that I like at first but enjoyed after a while. Looking forward to the next two books

Zombies are real. What would you do?

This is a story about the zombie apocalypse. It tells of how it was started and follows the lives of the first patients to be infected and how widespread it became. The cdc seems not to be able to control it. I love the length the author goes to to develop his characters and their back stories. There are definitely ones that I love, hate, and hate to love. The character Von Brawn is such a jerk but I found myself rooting for him because I felt a sense of sadness that he became a zombie. It wasn't his fault. The storyline is easy to follow. It really transitions smoothly even with how the author goes from one place to the next following the characters he is talking about at the time. I did find that there was also a small sense of a love story brewing for Dr Twee. It felt good that even in the face of disaster the human heart could find love.

Now the narrator I would have to give 3 stars. I don't feel he added as much to the telling of the story as he could have. Don't get me wrong he did good but I don't feel it was an Oscar worthy performance.
Overall I love what Peter Meredith has accomplished here. It's a very solid piece to add to my zompoc collection.

breathe taking new view on zombies

What amazed me most is that this book is all just the first capsulating the first day. And it's view point and mind set of pre zombie to full infected was a revolutionary aspect.

hmmm

I liked the different take on zombies but found the outrageous stereotypes off putting. The language was also too much as I get that it is needed to set up a character but the amount used felt excessive . The characters also felt at times to be inconsistent in behaviors. I did appreciate the honesty of how slow the government and others would be on actually believing and reacting to the problem.

Another solid Peter Meredith story.

I am a big fan of Peter Meredith's writing. This book was a solid story for fans of the genre. I am a molecular biologist, so I really enjoyed the science and medical elements of the story. While not perfect from a cellular metabolism standpoint, it was well within the realm of acceptable for fiction! The narration was good, I did think the Arkansas accents were a bit over the top however. The story was a little slow getting going for the sake of character introduction, but they characters were great. I LOVE when a author manages to write a female scientist who can be professional and analytical without being horrible unlikable. I think this book is screaming for a sequel and I can't wait to listen.

Excellent!!!!

This. Was. Awesome!!!

Dr Lee is a brilliant doctor and has managed to find a cure for lung cancer. Her dream come true, and with the cure ready for human tests and the new Walton facility ready, she is ready! unbeknownst to her though, one of her colleagues is a spy and is giving all her data to the Chinese government. He has also sabotaged her cure knowing that it won't work, but what both don't know is that the cure will turn their subjects into blood and flesh eating Zombies.

Plot wise, I absolutely loved how the Zombies came to be. This really goes into the before of the cure and how the cure came to be. The cure works and everyone is so excited to make history and finally cure cancer, but when one stupid person sabotages it it creates an apocalyptic event! I also loved how we see the events leading up to the quarantined failure and how the virus spread. This book answers every possible question you could have. So many times when reading a Zombie book, we are left with a lot of questions on how the virus started, how it spread etc, but this shows exactly what happened in the course of one day, to make the virus spread!

There is also a variety of characters, and again, often times I'd get confused with the sheer number of them, but here I actually found myself following everyone's story perfectly! We see through so many different eyes, from the doctors, nurses, officers, test subjects, prisoners and more importantly, the zombies, that the book seems to span months, rather than just a day!!

In all, an action packed, edge of your seat book. It captured my attention right from the start and held it throughout. I absolutely devoured it and can't wait for book 2.

I had to check and see if Ive listened to anything else by Erik Johnson because I thoroughly enjoyed his narration. I haven't but have added some to my list!! With the sheer amount of characters, I thought he did an amazing job keeping them separate and giving them their own tone. He really gave his all and it showed!

*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*
