About this listen

Trouble comes in threes...

One doomed love affair after another has made lovely Alex Walton swear off men. Now, she's determined to try something that maybe she can succeed at: a writing career. Little does she know that a chance meeting with a strikingly handsome stranger, a mysterious obelisk, and a lost kingdom will change her life forever. As Alex is about to discover, truth can be stranger—and far more dangerous—than fiction.

...but true love comes only once.

After three years inside a terrorist organization, Phillip Turman is trying to rebuild his life. His first assignment is to pick up Alex Walton, the maid of honor for his best friend's wedding, at the airport. His second is to deal with his instant attraction to her. But his third may be the toughest: to keep Alex out of danger as his past—and her need to know about it—threaten to destroy their future.

Critic reviews

"Adventure, secrets, and burning desire keep the pages turning...Recommended for readers curious about Abrams's early works and those who enjoy lyrical prose with witty banter similar to the books of Eric Jerome Dickey and Terry McMillan."—Booklist

Good read.

I enjoyed this book. The storyline was very interesting. However, the love story was similar to the previous book, which made this one predictable. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the plot. Looking forward to the next, if there is another. I wonder what a book about Atlas would entail…

A Great Read

There was a somewhat slow build but once the action started this book kept me engaged! I really am beginning to like this author. Her style is different. This is my second book read from her. I love mystery and especially espionage and intrigue. African American culture and literature has some of the best storytelling.

Excitement, Love, and suspenseful

Storyline well done…characters, settings, all encompassing for reader. Plot was well planned, and gave the reader something to keep reading right up to the end of the story.

enjoyable romantic story

This was my first Stacey Abrams book. Although predictable I enjoyed the romance between Alex and Phillip. You could really feel the passion between these two!
January LaVoy never disappoints! Wonderful narration as always!

Characters were interesting. Liked the back story

Still don’t know why Phillip was held captive while in Congress. Where was the country. Not sure if it was No Africa? And why did Raleigh try to kill him?

Intrigue & Heart Stopping Romance

Totally engrossing and rich with interesting characters, Stacey/Selena have made me a fan. This is my third read in three weeks. While Justice Sleeps, Rogue Justice, and now Art of Desire. Great poolside, beach or airplane read. Awesome alternative to mindless television shows. I’d love, love, love to see Stacey’s work as a streamed Netflix or Hulu series!

Not enough character development

I love the fact that the characters were predominantly African American. what I didn't like about it was that there wasn't enough character development for me to really invest in the main characters. and there were so many love scenes in the book. but because I didn't invest myself in the characters, I didn't believe him. I'm almost tempted to ask for my credits back but I did finish the book. it wasn't horrible but it was not my favorite of her books that I've read so far.
