Publisher's summary

Equal parts scientific, philosophical, and practical. Become your best self by first defining it.

The Art of Self-Awareness takes you on a journey - not to an exotic destination, but inwards. It’s perilous, scary, and uncomfortable, but the end rewards will be fantastic. Self-awareness is not simply knowing your name; it’s knowing what makes you happy, what makes you sad, and the underlying beliefs and values that create those emotions.

Most people look externally for answers to their problems, but that’s like putting a band-aid on top of a pothole. Everything that makes your life good or bad comes from within, and it’s time to finally learn what lies beneath. The toughest skill of all: metacognition, which is thinking about your thinking. The keys to avoiding self-delusion and self-sabotage.

Patrick King is an internationally best-selling author and social skills coach. His writing draws of a variety of sources, from scientific research, academic experience, coaching, and real-life experience. Self-awareness is social awareness. Know thyself, and your relationships will benefit tenfold. Self-awareness is not just a journey about yourself - it involves the people around you. Understanding how your own emotions, values, and beliefs work will finally allow you to truly empathize with your friends, family, and significant other.

To get to Point B, you must know what Point A is. Listen to this book to find your starting point, your end goal, and what must happen in between!

Pretty good

My main takeaway is the wheel of emotions. I very much liked the front-end of the book. It did go a bit off the rails for me toward the end when discussing social awareness. Although, that's not surprising to me and generally what happens with many of these kinds of books. Overall, I think it's a good book that can be helpful for people.

Becoming Self Aware is Hard Work

I recently had a very large loss in my life. As part of my introspective search, I realize that I need to become more self-aware, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. Patrick King gives us some very useful tools, realizations, and ideas about how we can better understand our level of self awareness. He starts by telling us that we have our own self-awareness and our social self-awareness. Learning to better understand yourself and how you are perceived by others is essentially the nature of this book.

I found it very useful and will likely review it several times.

I realize that becoming more self-aware is hard work. But if done properly, well worth it.

Don’t bother. Read this instead…

I’ve listened to this book at least two times and I’ve also listened to the book Insight by Eurich two times as well. Out of these two books, I would definitely recommend the Insight book. Insight is about self-awareness written by a true expert in the field. If you read Insight there’s absolutely no need for King’s book.
