Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year's recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec's work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler - with his ex's new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start. Dylan Booth doesn't have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can't say no to the request for help.
Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex's company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec's new boyfriend. But Dylan's a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can't afford to get attached, and Dylan's learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real....

Would you listen to The Backup Boyfriend again? Why?
No. But I very seldom listen to books a second time. What was one of the most memorable moments of The Backup Boyfriend?
I always enjoy reading about accomplished gay guys with relatively normal lives. Doctors, mechanics, etc...Have you listened to any of Marc Bachmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Both books in this seriesAny additional comments?
Binge listened to it. (and the sequel) both were great fun.Very fun read

The narration? This a an example of where Marc Bachmann is the right guy for the job. Found him wildly miscast in Annabeth Albert's Trust With a Chaser. But here, he channels his gravelly tone well for two guys who aren't twenty somethings. His underlying warmth is the right balance and he handles the range of characters well.
This is the first of a series. While none of the three is terrible, I find they struggle to have any element that rings true. Jaymes went to the file cabinet for stock characters - the motorcycle riding tough guy, the guy who everyone sees as soft and has something to prove, the very rich guy who throws money around and is the life of the party, but is really sad, the risk taker who realizes maybe too late that the real risk he needed to take was love, you get the idea - you've read them all before. Every time I finish a title, I ask myself: "was this worth a $12 credit?" My answer to all of these is no.
I do think this is the best of the series, book three is pretty good, the second installment tries too hard.
If you buy the "Gay for You" premise, you'll be ok
