About this listen

When Ramón Salazar swims into an underwater cave in a deserted lagoon, he discovers the black pearl, the Great Pearl of Heaven. As the son of a pearl merchant, Ramón knows that this is the rarest and most valuable pearl in the world. He quickly scoops it up and brings it home to his father. Ramón's father believes the pearl is a blessing from the sea, but others in their tiny seaside town do not agree. They think Ramón has brought a curse upon his family, for the pearl belongs to the Manta Diablo, the most terrifying and monstrous devilfish of all. The manta, they say, will not give up his treasure easily. He will come to reclaim the pearl - and it is Ramón who will have to face him.

Scott O'Dell, the winner of the Hans Christian Anderson Award for his contributions to children's literature, spins a stirring story that resounds with all the power of a great legend. A Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, The Black Pearl is captivating entertainment for all ages.

Fantastic Adventure!

Thy son read this book for 6th grade. I had a day long chore to do and decided to listen in full as I only got bits and pieces with him. What a tale!!! I lamented at not having read it first to discuss the Christian themes. This book can preach! I highly recommend for boys and girls if high adventure as it never stops being engaging. No matter your faith, the themes and virtues are tried and tested and the lessons are timeless. Pride and fear are a constant lure, you must overcome it and make peace. A MUST read!

A great book for my son and myself

My son really enjoyed this book. He is 11. The only conplaint he had was the narrator was a little slow in reading. I think it was necessary for the full comprehension of the foreign language that is introduced in phrases, names and places from Mexico. Overall a real good book.

Intense

Great read for adults and 9-year olds alike. Our other favorites are Hatchet & Woods Runner by Gary Paulson.

Beautiful Adventure

O’dell paints a beautifully simple story where the young protagonist, Ramon, looks to find adventure and become a respected man in a confusing world. During his small adventure, he has to confront superstition, religion and what it means to be a man, among other things.
