I thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut novel. This was pitched as Avatar the Last Air Bender meets the dark gritty-ness of Game of Thrones and it did not disappoint.
I loved the multi povs and really enjoyed getting to see the story from the heroes and villains as the story played out. The setting and history was well thought out and was not provided in an info dump sort of way that many books 1's tend to do. The plot also kept me hooked throughout the story. I am really excited to see what Pantanella does with the rest of the series.

Having seen the author on TikTok, I was excited to get the book and read it/listen to it as soon as possible. I really think the story has a lot of promise, but I think I’m going to buy the novel and read it versus listen to it. This is, in my opinion a very hard story to follow an audible setting.

Updated: having to listen to the series and read the novels and gone back through a second listen, it’s now easier to understand and quite the story that has no real equal in the fantasy setting. Just when you expect a hero, the pool plot armor out or some miracle skill, is win a reality set in that this is not a book that leads you would feel good, more than needy, greediness of cold dark reality.

3 hours in, i still don’t know who the main character is, what the conflict is, what is going on. Chaos is definitely what I am getting from the audio. No redeeming qualities here.
