About this listen

Sheila Webb expected to find a respectable blind lady waiting for her at 19 Wilbraham Crescent - not the body of a middle-aged man sprawled across the living room floor. But when old Miss Pebmarsh denies sending for her in the first place, or of owning all the clocks that surround the body, it's clear that they are going to need a very good detective.

"This crime is so complicated that it must be quite simple," declares Hercule Poirot. But there's a murderer on the loose, and time is ticking away.

I really like this book and Hugh Fraser is flawless, but I wonder why Dame Agatha barely used her greatest detective. Poirot does very little in this book. If you listen closely, very closely you can solve the crime yourself. I love it when I get to the last chapter and am right about the killer!

Where is Poirot???

I love listening to Agatha Christie books on the whole - this particular one was "so-so." I notice sometimes in Poirot mysteries, the "key" to the matter hinges on a little detail - but sometimes that little detail is also "too" obscure (2 such instances in The Clocks). I find her grand reveals more effective when they contain a "little detail" that was easy to overlook (or fail to make a connection), but is also an obvious and gleaming revelation when it is brought to light.

That said, I am not complaining. I very much enjoyed the experience of listening to this book and wondering at the mystery, as always. And, at this point, Hugh Fraser's narration is half the draw for me, and never disappoints.

I also don't mean to gripe that all of Christie's works could not each simultaneously be "her masterpiece" - I remind myself that I am grateful that she left behind such a vast breadth of work of such high overall quality for people to continue enjoying decades and decades later. Her works have almost singlehandedly been keeping my mind occupied during the pandemic.

So-so,but still an enjoyable listening experience!

Not a Hercule novel as such since he doesn't really appear for much of the story but certainly no less entertaining for that. AC really knew how to engage a reader and keep attention and interest high without tricks or melodrama or violence or gore - just with good storytelling. This is interesting and engrossing from the first pages and highly recommended.

HIGHLY ENTERTAINING
