About this listen

Ben was a thirty-year-old computer software engineer. He is an alcoholic who has lost his career, his marriage and his home. Currently living in a sober home on Cape Cod he’s trying to put his life back together. The dichotomy of him living a desperate and bare bones existence in one of the most popular vacation spots in the country serves as the backdrop for the beginning of this story; his struggle to stay sober and win his wife back. His only confidant is a two-year-old boy who shares his name and who died a hundred years before Ben was born. He shares his thoughts and fears with this child’s tombstone because it offers him a safe, nonjudgmental outlet. After four failed attempts at rehab it is his only therapy but he is at a point in his life where even the smallest hope is worth grasping for. The first part of this story ends with him failing once again at everything he’s fought so hard to gain.

The second part finds Ben defeated, demoralized, with no desire to begin again. He leaves Cape Cod for California only because it’s as far away as a bus ride can take him. He is homeless and lacks the will to do anything about it. He wanders from place-to-place aimlessly, interacting with a diverse cast of characters both good and bad as he goes. In different ways they all force him to consider the path he’s on. It’s a long and twisted road that begins with homelessness and ends in a tiny town on the Oregon coast that offers him what is likely his final chance to survive.
