About this listen

Tom Fulwood, the future Earl of Standish, discovers at the age of 15 that marriage can destroy a man, namely his father. His mother prefers entertaining men in her bedroom, while her husband sits downstairs, unable or unwilling to respond to his wife's inappropriate behavior. From that day on Tom vows that no woman will hurt him the way his mother hurt his father. For the next 17 years, Tom works hard to become one of the most notorious rakes London society has ever seen, successfully keeping all the women of his acquaintance at a distance.

In 1810, 24-year-old Isabelle Crawford had been brought up hearing stories of how much in love her dead parents were, and had expected to find similar happiness when she came out in society. Reality was different to what she had imagined though; instead of love, she found fortune hunters and as a result left London to set up home in Bath. Her two elder brothers had supported her decision, although they would have rather seen their sister married instead of choosing what was seen by the town as an eccentric decision, a young woman living a single life in Bath with a cousin as chaperone.

A potential marriage between Tom and Isabelle's respective brother and sister throws the couple together and sets in motion a chain of events that will see Tom fighting for his life and Isabelle being kidnapped by the very man that Tom had found in his mother's bedchamber all those years ago.

Marvelous

Audrey Harrison is a brilliant story teller. The words make the reader fully engage with the characters in the story. I love this story and highly recommend it. Of course the narration was quite on point and brought the words from the page to life.

Narrator sounded as if she hadn't read the book!

I liked the story but the performance of the nareator was terrible. There was no colour in her story telling and she actually sounded as if she was reading the book for the first time often pausing as if to make sense of what she was reading. It's a shame as I found the story to be quite entertaining.

Regency Romance

The narrator makes it difficult to enjoy the story. Better if I read the book myself.

Complicated complications

The Earl certainly created complications even though they might shave initially been caused by his mother in his youth and this made it a very interesting read/listen. Such strange ideals to live ones life by. Poor man! But he was lucky enough to have had someone pushing him in the right direction and eventually came to his senses.
Just goes to show that one has to take responsibility for every action in life.
I enjoyed the sound of the narrators different voices but Ms. Nagle would do better to either pre read or practice her reading before recording. Other than her brief hesitations and strange inflections on the odd occasion, her reading was most entertaining.
The story is of a high caliber and this is what I have come to expect from this author, Audrey Harrison.
Most enjoyable and I recommend this book.

Bad narrator!

Actually.... the word narrator is wrong, this book was poorly read by someone whose mind must have kept wandering. There can be no other excuse for how horrible this was. Add to that foot steps, phones ringing and traffic like noises and put a unfamiliar reader in front of a strange book and you've got it!

The sad thing is that the book is actually rather interesting.....

Childhood trauma shadows adult behavior

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've recommended this audio book to my sister.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Complicated Earl?

The recurring theme of how childhood disillusion kept getting in the way of present relationships.

Have you listened to any of Nano Nagle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard any of her other performances. Her cadence was a bit unusual at times, but it didn't get in the way of my enjoyment of the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

More like wanting to get back to it as time permitted

Any additional comments?

I liked how the author linked childhood emotional trauma to adult dysfunctional behavior and the expected social behavior for that time.

An Okay Listen

It was a struggle to get thru but once I speeded up the narration it got much. Sometimes, as is this time, the narrator is so slow and ponderous that it takes away the joy of listening and puts you to sleep.

Terrible narration

This was the worst narrated book I have ever listen to, and I’ve listened to a good many. It sounded like the reader was just learning how to punctuate vocally. The story was good, but because of the narration, was tainted. If i was the author, I would be insulted. It would be better to read this book on your own in my opinion.
