Publisher's summary

Paramedic Lauren Yates stumbles into a world of trouble the night she discovers a dead man in an inner city alley, for the killer lurks nearby. When the murderer threatens to make her life hell if she tells the police, she believes him – he's Thomas Werner, her sister's ex, and a very bad man indeed. But when a stabbing victim tells her with his dying breath that Werner attacked him too, she finds herself with blood on her hands and Detective Ella Marconi on her back. Will Ella's investigation put her career on the line, just when she's finally got her foot in the door? And can Lauren keep her family safe before Werner makes good on his promise, or will they all pay the ultimate price?

Critic reviews

'Howell may have left the ambulance service but she can still drive a narrative at full speed with the sirens blaring. Pass me the oxygen.' (Sydney Morning Herald)
'A finely paced and engrossing second novel by this talented Australian writer, who is herself a former paramedic.' (The Guardian)

Where's the ENDING?

This author is so talented!! But there was no ending to this book! It just stopped!

So many things left up in the air-- What happened with Joe and Lauren and Claire? Is Joe okay? Are Lauren and Joe getting together? What happened with Ella and Wayne? If the author didn't want us to be interested in the characters' relationships then she should not have gotten us interested in the characters' relationships. Just when you start getting attached to the characters, they go away. I thought: how could there be only 3 minutes left? It needed 2 more chapters. There were too long areas of internal thinking, monotonous details about the crime, on and on and repetitive. That time should have been spent on 2 more chapters.

Book 1 was better than this, They usually get better. I gave 2/3 stars instead of 1 for "overall" and "story" because the writer, as above, is VERY talented and did describe the duties of a paramedic very well. And she created great, vivid characters. But boy, where are the editors?? Are some of these books even brought to an editor? I've already bought book 3 so I really hope that in it, we will be given more info on book 2's characters. I'll change this review if there is. But I think all will be forgotten from book 2, Some important type of connection is missing between these books, they're not like other series of books. And the "main" character, Ella, is not the dominant focus of these books. The main focus are the characters that go away.

As always, Caroline Lee was wonderful. I LOVE her voice so much.

UPDATE: Book 3 has more of connection to this book. Much better!! Wayne and Ella are still with us. A LOT more character development. So far, great book!
