Publisher's summary

It was the murder that shocked the nation. Thirty years ago, Kate Rokesmith went walking by the river with her young son. She never came home. For three decades her case file has lain, unsolved, in the corner of an attic - until Stella Darnell, daughter of Detective Chief Superintendent Darnell, starts to clear out her father's house after his death.

creative writing class

Would you try another book from Lesley Thomson and/or Paul Ansdell?

Probably not, unless it got rave reviews--as for the author. Paul Ansdell is good.

What could Lesley Thomson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The book seemed to be demonstrations of creative writing essays which were accomplished but not relevant to the story of this book. The book has an absurdly long intro/background--through chapter 12, much of which really didn't advance the plot or character development. I wondered if the book was really a cobbled-together combination of short pieces written, as I said, for a creative writing class.

Which character – as performed by Paul Ansdell – was your favorite?

I actually didn't like any of the characters except the dead detective. Sarah seemed to be off her trolley for no good reason that I could determine.

Was The Detective's Daughter worth the listening time?

Barely, but I made it through.

Different

A very unique perspective. I enjoyed the story and the narrator. Amateur detectives usually devolve into extreme caricatures, not so in this case. This was not a jam packed thriller, but more a slow build with a natural and inevitable end.

Reader is terrible

I thought the story had the potential to be much better but the reader was just terrible. He made the characters sound stupid and ignorant.

how do I return this book?

Slow moving, annoying narrator. Didn't like it at all and cannot find the return button

This book is garbage

The reader is very good. The material is awful. I was really hopeful with the hype on this book, and the fact that there are nine books all together with these characters. The way the book starts is hopeful as well, with a kid witnessing his mother's murder. I was also engaged with a kind of shut-down clean freak woman whose dad, an English detective, has just passed away suddenly. Turns out she's as wooden as the rest of the characters, and the teasers for becoming an interesting story are just that: teasers. Nothing pans out. This author was apparently paid by the page, the book is truly garbage.
