About this listen

When a local quarry yields a garroted body with bad dental work and toes tattooed in Cyrillic, Joe Gunther figures it's a Russian Mafia killing, rare as that might be in Vermont. But it's so very...tidy. So very...professional. Then the CIA calls, inviting Gunther down to Washington for some friendly "assistance" with his case. Suddenly he's caught up in a shadowy game of cross and double-cross - manipulated by cynical, cold warriors who don't seem to have gotten the memo - and Gunther soon realizes that he's a pawn both sides are willing to sacrifice.

Great story! Having the CIA angle, kept me entertained and it was probably one of his best, next to Open Season.

Amazing

Another great Gunther story with a very interesting twist. After this one, Joe deserves a trip to the Virgin Islands for some R&R.

When a plot requires the supernatural, I feel that the author ran out of good ideas. I don't feel so strongly, but I do think less of the author of a detective-style murder mystery, particularly one set in northern New England, if his plot requires the Central Intelligence Agency. It's not that I dislike the CIA. In fact I have read and enjoyed *many* spy stories, be they fiction, nonfiction, or an uncertain blend of the two; but in my mind the spy/espionage genre is distinct from the detective/murder-mystery genre, and mixing them does not work. A reader needs one mindset when he/she reads a detective/murder-mystery story, and a quite different mindset he/she reads a spy story.

My one criticism of Mayers Higher novels is that sometimes they seem like a Vermont travelogue. But, I get it, he loves his State. that being said, the story and plot twists are some of the most complex of any of his novels. And, when the action starts it is lengthy and proceeds at supersonic speed. Maybe the most enjoyable book of the series, and at this time I have read over 20 of the Joe Gunther novels! I highly recommend The Disposable Man, definitely NOT a disposable novel in the series!

Never disappointed with Joe Gunther. This time he is in it up to his ears. And who ends up in the ending near him but Gail, Kunkle and Sam. What a great exciting story.

Absolutely mind-boggling and exciting!

Great plot, well told and sufficiently satisfying
It should be noted, the voice actor performing here holds The keys to the kingdom, as it were.
Meaning, his talent elevates the written word to the level of greatness. Highly recommend both author and actor

Performance Extraordinaire

The narrator was as great as usual he really brings the series to life. The twists and turns in this plot were surprising and very different than previous ones. I really enjoyed it and look forward to listening to the next one!

I really liked this plot.
