About this listen

Marcus Flavius Aquila, a young centurion in Roman Britain, is forced into retirement after receiving a wound in his first major engagement against a rebel British tribe. It allows him the freedom to embark upon a dangerous mission to find out what happened to the Ninth Legion, which, years before, disappeared in the savage lands of the Picts. Will he find out what happened to the men, led by his father, who never returned? And will he recover the Eagle, the symbol of Roman dominance and power?

Mixed

i have lived Rosemary Sutcliffe for many many years and thought the narrator did a good job but what is with the music? Found it totally incongruous with the telling of the, story and very disruptive to the flow.

Well done

Listening to this audio tape has been very nice. having a daughter that lives in the UK and visiting her several times. England has a fascinating history, the Roman time after ad 43 was miraculous in all the things that the Romans accomplished. the tape is very well done and the story was streamlined and very understandable. Market Harborough has a museum of the finest quality that include a lot of the Roman artifacts amazing hoard and discoveries were made there. thank you so much

An Unabridged Book and NO Music

I truly enjoyed The Eagle of the Nineth, with one large exception.

The story is good. The pace is set for action. The narrator was excellent. An unabridged book would have made a hugh difference.

Now for the downside. The interludes of classic music, which had absolutely no reason to be part of this book. It was plain annoying.

I remember this from my childhood

love it, the only criticism is the music between chapters but a good book nonetheless.

Excellent Living Book

A basic understanding of the time period would be helpful to the listener. The first chapter was a bit hard for my 10 year old to grasp. After the 1st chapter the story takes off and never slows down. A great story about Rome's struggle to maintain its sprawling empire and one officer's struggle to find meaning in it all.

This is great

I was walking and listening to this when I got hit by a umbrella I never new where it came from.I was also in a costume because I just finished my part in the lord of the rings. I was playing as one of the ork's at hellms deep. Peter Jackson was the the one who made the lord of the rings great after Tolkien made the books. Vego was always ready to do any thing and he inspired us all. That's right Vego you are the best and to all of you if you are a fan of the lord of the rings call Vego or Ian mic helon ,Peter Jackson, or Orlando Bloom. And good job Peter for living your dream and starting at age 18 ether know it took 4 years . we would take as long as it took to finish it. Thank you fore all the inspiration and time you all sacrificed. From stunt ork

PS remember when I ''fell'' from the later and onto the blue mat and when Vego broke his tooth I felt bad for him.

good story, annoying music

I'm a sucker for Roman historical fiction and thenstory didn't disappoint, though the music between chapters was ridiculous and unnecessary.
