About this listen

In a renovated Gothic church on Long Island lives Jonathan Hemlock, an art professor and a world-renowned mountain climber who finances his black-market art collection by working as a freelance assassin.

Now, Hemlock is being tricked into a hazardous assignment that involves an attempt to scale one of the most treacherous mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps: the Eiger. His target is one of his three fellow climbers. The problem is that the CII can't tell him which one.

This spine-tingling adventure, part thriller and part satire, introduces an intriguing cast of villains, traitors, and beautiful women into a highly charged atmosphere of danger and suspicion that builds to a death-defying climax.

I know its a classic but…..

Once u you get beyond the silliness with names (Randi Knickers - really!?!), the climbing sections of novel are gripping and the suspense and twist are great.

truly entertaining

A great book I have now heard 3X and just noticed I have never written a review. Dont blame the book. Clint E made a poor movie of it and if you read the wiki entry you'll know why it was poor. Clint apparently failed to notice that the whole story is a revenge/hurt my friend I hurt you epic. Sure the plot is a stretch but name me one plot that isn't. That's what plots are for. The mountain climbing scenes - and there are several - are very exciting and make me understand the attraction. The heroes are real heroes with flaws and the beautiful women are beautiful women, not apologies. I liked it three times already and will come back again. Recommended.

Excellent Book!

A refreshing book. No politically correct nonsense. Just an exciting adventure/spy story. I think I’ll give rock climbing a whirl ... just for shits and grins.

Excellent and suspenseful

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was exciting and suspenseful, albeit laced with sexism akin to Mad Men and sadly typical of the early ‘70’s. A mountain climbing thriller is a unique twist on the genre and Trevanian handles it well, as the hero confronts hardships thrown by nature and by the villains. Joe Barret is superb, as always. This is quality entertainment, well worth a credit.

Better the Second Time Around

Joe Barrett's narration of The Eiger Sanction lends sanity to this crazy rendering by Trevanian. Perhaps rereading this just after listening to "Shibumi" adds to the hilarity in this story of espionage and sanctioned assassinations.

Great story, great narration

No novel by Trevanian is a straightforward matter. Part thriller, part satire, EIGER SANCTION is an extremely well written treatise on mountain climbing, a dig at celebrity culture, an examination of the mind of a killer and in the final analysis; a great story. While a little slow to get going, the novel quietly builds up a head of steam, and while there is lots of diversion along the way, once the tension starts rising the pace never lets up.
The narrator is really good.

Good satire and thriller

I just loved this book. The story is build up very well towards climbing the Eiger. The climbing itself is an awful good chapter with a surprising final. The narrator Joe Barret is really excellent. And folks; I am a girl and did not mind the fancy bits at all.
