The Energy Curfew Music Hour

By: Chris Thile, Claire Coffee, Punch Brothers
Narrated by: Chris Thile, Punch Brothers

Publisher's summary

It’s time to unplug with the Grammy-winning Punch Brothers, fronted by singer-mandolinist Chris Thile, as they bring you a multi-episode musical variety show with dazzling musical guests, like Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, Jon Batiste, Norah Jones, James Taylor, and many more.

We join them in the near future when diminishing resources and extreme weather have ushered in a worldwide effort to ration electricity. America has instituted a weekly “energy curfew” where the power grid goes down completely and we all live electricity-free for 24 hours. The Energy Curfew Music Hour hits the airwaves an hour before the lights go out while the nation tunes in and turns off together before the Dark Day.

Recorded live in front of an audience, revel in the wild and wonderful joy unleashed in these one-night-only performances. Chris Thile and Punch Brothers help you wind down before you power down. Happy Dark Day, y’all.

What a great idea, Audible!

I love the little "commercial" breaks! The music genre is so fun and completely wonderful!

More please

Man, do I love these folks. More of this would be very welcome, as would be, if you’re listening, Punch Brethren, your complete Goldberg Variations. I’d also enthusiastically accept an entire album of Breaking Trad. Oh, and a little EP of Bulgarian tunes. And if Gaby Moreno put you in the mood to play around with flamenco, I certainly wouldn’t complain.

Which is all to say— more, please.

Long Live Real Music

You had me at Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers! I’ve been a Chris Thile fan since his early days in Nickel Creek. Chris is such a creative and talented artist. He still amazes me what he can do on a mandolin.
The Energy Hour reminds me of the old time radio variety shows they used to air before TV came along. Listening to this was like a breath of fresh air. I loved LOVED the commercials of the future. So creative! Had me rolling in laughter at work to some. I really hope more episodes or books come out like this. Music of today needs a little kick in the rear to get back to basics! Music needs to stop using autotune and go to originality. The airwaves are stale and lacking. Releasing stripped down acoustic music really separates a true musician from a created musician.

Love a good variety show!

As a fan of Punch Brothers and Chris Thile, I was lucky enough to attend the recording of one of the episodes and now I’m so happy to hear all of them. The musical performances are amazing, the monologues and skits are wonderful, and the variety of talent is incredible.

Surprising, Joyous, Beautiful and Perfect for a Quiet Day at Home

I barely knew about any of these artists including Punch Brothers. Nobody plays or talks about “interesting “, good new music on the radio anymore and of course streaming is often all about the same stuff you know and like. But there is a whole universe of wonderful music out there. Was very surprised that Audible introduced me to these amazing artists and the wonderful music that they created and performed. But I’m very happy that they did and I’m hopeful that there will be a lot more. BTW, the setting and story around the performances is fun but also totally believable in these times. We need to think about the future a LOT more, and do something to heal our world. But how great would it be if we could also have fun while we do it? Great stuff…total land highly recommended!

Magical

I was fortunate to attend a few of these live recordings, and it is so nice to hear them all again! Chris, Claire, and the Punch Brothers have crafted a charming, silly, and beautiful radio show. And the guests! Such a talented line up. I do hope there are more in the future.

Gifted musicians and storytellers right in their element and at the height of their powers

The Punch Brothers continue to solidify their place as American cultural treasures - and the Energy Curfew hour is another example of how they can combine what might seem like peerless musical acumen with a uniquely selfless brand of collaborative joy.

This program is an absolute triumph in musical performance, audio storytelling, and social commentary. I've never heard anything so simultaneously inspiring and challenging, so perfectly chilling and heartwarming at every turn.

Audible - give this program the attention it deserves! It should be deployed as individual episodes (as the substance is structured)! And if you haven't given these performers and this production team the blank check or green light or high sign or whatever to continue this as long as they'd like - I think you're obligated to future of American culture (and energy policy) to do so!
