Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham delivers high-flying international suspense in a stunning legal thriller that marks the return of Mitch McDeere, the brilliant hero of The Firm.

“A breathtaking update on the McDeeres and the life they made . . . Grisham, in vintage form, ratchets up the suspense in this winning sequel.” —The Wall Street Journal

What became of Mitch and Abby McDeere after they exposed the crimes of Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country? The answer is found in The Exchange, the riveting sequel to The Firm, the blockbuster thriller that launched the career of America’s favorite storyteller. It is now fifteen years later, and Mitch and Abby are living in Manhattan, where Mitch is a partner at the largest law firm in the world. When a mentor in Rome asks him for a favor that will take him as far as Istanbul and Tripoli, Mitch finds himself at the center of a sinister plot that has worldwide implications. Once again Mitch’s colleagues, friends, and family are targeted. Mitch is a master at staying one staying one step ahead of his adversaries, but this time there’s nowhere to hide.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Edoardo Ballerini masterfully narrates this sequel, reacquainting listeners with Mitch and Abby McDeere 15 years after their harrowing misadventures in THE FIRM.... Ballerini leverages his talent with accents as the action moves back and forth from New York to Rome, Libya, Morocco, and Maine. Impressively, Ballerini also finds credible voices for Abby, who plays a big role, and for the McDeeres' twin 8-year-old sons.... The result is a well-narrated audiobook." (AudioFile)

Editorial Review

The long-awaited sequel to The Firm does not disappoint
Edoardo Ballerini delivers a suspense-filled performance of this sequel to John Grisham’s bestselling 1991 novel (and the 1993 film starring Tom Cruise), The Firm. It’s been 15 years since Mitch and Abby McDeere fled Memphis. They’re now living in Manhattan with their 8-year-old twin sons, and Mitch is a partner at one of New York’s biggest law firms. When a colleague is kidnapped in Libya, Mitch must navigate international intrigue to thwart the impending execution and come up with the staggering $100 million ransom. Ballerini’s taut narration pairs well with Grisham’s short chapters, perfectly building up the urgency of the story’s drama for a thrilling, pulse-pounding listen. —Margaret H., Audible Editor

Boring

This book bears zero resemblance to the Firm and is so boring that I quit 2/3 of the way through. I wish I hadn’t pre-ordered and could have checked other reviews before using a credit

Enjoyable!

I was stunned to see such negative comments. I finished it in one day because it was thoroughly enjoyable. The characters were sympathetic and the moral questions that Mitch dealt with in the Firm were still prominent in this sequel, if approached from a different angle. I liked seeing Mitch and Abby as mature persons.
I hope readers will see more of Them in the future.

A lot of names for very little story

I’m a long time John Grisham fan. This is just not one to make the list. It seems like it had a lot of possibility but it never really went anywhere.

Great narration

Disappointed with storyline and lack of momentum. Someone said boring - they are not wrong. Kept reading expecting excitement especially with the return to the Caymans. Oh well 😕

Not the best Grisham but enjoyable

I wouldn't say it was his best but the book is enjoyable. It's hard to meet the expectations of The Firm. That was one of his best.
Matt and Abbey are wonderful characters and the ending sets the stage for another sequel.

Too much focus on logistics - not enough plot.

I usually love JG’s books and am always excited for a new release. This book, however, falls FAR short of expectations. Most of the copy is spent covering menus, planes, hotels, and other travel logistics with very little ink devoted to character development or storyline. Extremely disappointing.

15 year wait for disappointment!

Mitch and Abby should have stayed in hiding. The book to bring them back from the Memphis disaster is a huge disappointment. Would not waste time or money on this story. Not classic Grisham at all.

What’s the point?

The story, I wouldn’t call it a plot line, could be reduced to one or two sentences. No twists, turns or surprises, just a long tale about a hostage situation. I finished the book but was disappointed.

Not up to par

The story line did not hold my interest. I know in today’s world this could possibly happen, but liked the southern lawyers better.

Disappointing

I have read all of Grisham's books. I found the fact that Mitch was running around the Middle East hard to fathom.
