About this listen

Fresh, funny and heartfelt, The Expectant Detectives is a charming debut mystery about a group of soon-to-be moms-turned-detectives.

“A darkly witty debut. Archly funny and highly recommended!”—Deanna Raybourn

Can they solve the mother of all murders?

For Alice and her partner Joe, moving to the sleepy village of Penton is a chance to embrace country life and prepare for the birth of their first child. He can take up woodwork; maybe she’ll learn to make jam? But the rural idyll they’d hoped for doesn’t quite pan out when a dead body is discovered at their local prenatal class, and they find themselves suspects in a murder investigation.

With a cloud of suspicion hanging over the heads of the whole group, Alice and her new-found pregnant friends set out to solve the mystery and clear their names, with the help of her troublesome dog, Helen. However, there are more secrets and tensions in the heart of Penton than first meet the eye. Between the discovery of a shady commune up in the woods, the unearthing of a mysterious death years earlier, and the near-tragic poisoning of Helen, Alice is soon in way over her head.

Critic reviews

"Full of charming characters, including Alice’s goofy dog, this fast-paced, original cozy is great fun. A sequel would be welcome."—Publishers Weekly

"Pointed banter between the heroine and pretty much everyone else keeps this debut sharp."—Kirkus Reviews

“A darkly witty debut. Archly funny and highly recommended!”—Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author of Killers of a Certain Age

I wasn’t sure I would enjoy the book. But I loved the narration. And the British humor broke up the story well.

Twists, turns and chuckles

Narrator was kind of smug about her insensitivity and the dog wasn’t amusing and I am bog on dogs.

Not my favorite but distracting

The author has a unique sense of humor and the dialogue and characterizations are realistic. You feel you know these people.

Lots of laughs and an unexpected ending.

The plot was decent, but there was a lot of “telling” and not enough “showing”. It was pretty cliche overall.

Cute but not very well-written

The narrator voices the main character expertly and perfectly captured the humor and awkwardness throughout the story. I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly. Alice, our main character, is not at all settled with the idea of giving birth and becoming a mother in a few short weeks, is uncertain about her decision to move to the country, and struggles with figuring out the personalities and interactions with potential new friends. Kat Ailes captures the humor and awkwardness in all of these things. The murder mystery is a backdrop for exploring the transition to motherhood, figuring out family, and forming friendships in this new stage of life.

Hilarious Light Read

This was an enjoyable cozy mystery. Women sleuths, who bond over being pregnant and a mystery.

Throughly enjoyed this book.

This was dull, a waste of time, and just didn’t have an intriguing story line or characters.

I can’t get that credit back.
