'Although I believe I will die here in this castle, my spirit will never be silent’

Ravenscraig Castle, Scotland. 1307

When the castle she works in is sacked by the army of Prince Edward of England, kitchen maid Agnes Fitzgerald manages to escape north of Inverness to throw herself at the mercy of the Lord and Lady at Ravenscraig Castle. Although safe for now, the people of Scotland are fighting hard for their independence, and the threat of the English hangs heavy over the land. But when Agnes spies Cam Buchanan swimming in the loch, her mind turns away from war and towards love. Agnes even dares to dream of a happy future, until she learns that Cam must go and fight alongside Robert de Brus.

Present day

Twins Leah and Zoe need a change, so caretaking at Ravenscraig Castle is the perfect opportunity to get away from it all. Surrounded by rugged Highland countryside, and bordered by a loch, the picturesque setting is everything they dreamed of. But the locals are reluctant to visit Ravenscraig, and there are whispers of ghosts and lost souls. The sisters quickly dismiss such superstition, but soon the overwhelming sadness they feel coming from the tower grows too hard to ignore.

Can the sisters finally right the wrongs of seven hundred years of heartbreak, seven hundred years of betrayal…

Historical Fiction with Love Story

It kept my attention all the way through…excellent storytelling! I loved learning about Scottish history and the love stories mixed into the story.

Lovely story in two time periods.

Enjoyed the story and actually got to listen to it while I was on vacation in Scotland, which made it really special!

Excellent narration and fun story

Scotland Castles, check. Ghosts, check. Then and now stories with likable (except that daft Effie) characters, check. Wars? Check. Olden Times and Modern Times? check. Deception and treachery? check. I did end up listening all night instead of sleeping because I go so into the story.

Romance? yes it's there. The love story for the 1300 century was important and key to the story, but the modern ones were not necessary except to add tension. If you want your main characters to find love and have the author expand on their newfound feelings being awakened, you'll enjoy this. If you love Scottish and British accents and ken how wonderful turns of phrase back then really sets the scene, aye, you'll enjoy this narration.

A bit hollow

My favorite genre, historical fiction with dual timeline. Have read or listened to many. But there is something missing with this story. In part perhaps in spite of character being a historian, her lack of next to no actual known history in the future. Or that so much of the story seems repetitive. Or that the “caretaker” so easily ignores the obvious. Still going on & on about having weddings. And her sister just goes along with her. They don’t even try to find out what the character knows who tells them to stay away from part of the castle. Leah seems akin (in mind) to Effie. Or maybe she’s bipolar. No surprise revelations. Something about it is hollow to me. It doesn’t seem right that Agnus learns someone knows of who & what Cam is, yet she doesn’t immediately relay this to Murial, Rona or Cam. Especially when the source of knowledge is so obviously not trustworthy. A big hole for me. At this point I just wanted to ff to find out the ending. It’s feels more like dissociation than dual timeline. In both timelines. Just want to move on to something else, as this is overall disconnected … sad. Not why I read or listen. Did have a nice ending.
