About this listen

Hoping to put behind him tragedy in his professional life and to resolve the turmoil in his personal life, Reykjavik police officer Guðgeir Fransson has moved as far away from home as he can, marking time in a dead-end job in a small town in eastern Iceland.

His detective's instincts are triggered when he hears about a foreign woman who arrived in this tight-knit community - and then disappeared as suddenly as she had appeared. The trail of the missing woman takes him back to Reykjavik, and then to a remote farmhouse beneath dark mountains where an elderly woman and her son live with their sinister past.

An exciting new voice in Nordic crime fiction, Glass Key Award-nominated Icelandic author Solveig Pálsdottir is published for the first time in English.

animal cruelty. callous characters (understatement). doesn't paint the people of Iceland especially positively. My main beef was the narrator who has a smooth calming voice more appropriate to talk you thru a tour of a luxurious spa or hotel or tropical destination. She does an excellent job pronouncing the Icelandic words. The narration could have used a lot more emotional delivery.

interesting troubling story

I liked the narration and the emphasis of the characters accents. one can feel the coldness of the environment of the setting

it was so psychological

This is a good one! Some parts are scary,
some irrelevant and all interesting.

This book was nicely paced, with well developed characters.
The narration leaves a bit to be desired but the story is a unique and intriguing one.
I was hoping for a more poetic ending as it relates to the fox, and our female protagonist (it felt like a lot more could’ve been done there to give this tale a jaw dropping finish)
Things are wrapped up a bit too neatly in the end. Given all of the emotional investment in these characters I think that a more nuanced and dare say a “more human approach” to the finish would’ve been more satisfying.
Still, this is a solid listen.
Looking forward to this author’s future offerings.

Surprisingly Good

Story was hard to follow and narration didn’t help either. Sounded like a ninth grade English assignment.

Waste of time
