About this listen

In this short thriller from number one New York Times best-selling authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, narrated by actress Kate Mara, a young woman’s dream getaway becomes her worst nightmare.

Prepare yourself for a transformative experience. Sometimes, life’s setbacks contain hidden gifts. Here at Lakewood, you’ll find the space to unwrap them.

A weekend at the Lakewood Retreat is exactly what Chloe Powell needs. Freshly unemployed after her boss loses a reelection campaign, the former press secretary desperately wants a break from the bustle of Washington, DC. A flier posted at her yoga studio leads her to the getaway, which looks amazing: Organic meals, celebrity testimonials, and a serene private property within driving distance of the city.

It’s so perfect, in fact, that Chloe’s barely bothered by the intensely personal questions she’s asked in her application, or the unnerving social experiments her enigmatic host, Sebastian, imposes on her once she arrives at his remote cabin. But when a mysterious new guest shows up, Chloe can no longer suppress her rising panic: This place is not at all what it seems.

A pulse-pounding story from the first minute to the last, The Getaway explores the weight of the small choices we make every day, and their staggering, unintended consequences.

Engaging story. Worth a listen.

A story without much depth but accomplishes what it aims to do: keep you hooked to see what happens next. The amateurish writing style stood out quite a bit during parts of this story but it didn't hinder my enjoyment. I wasn't expecting greatness; I just was expecting an engaging story and this delivered. I was going to give 3 stars based on the writing being subpar at times but this short story earned one of those stars back by keeping my attention and being enjoyable despite it's flaws.

Not what I expected

I'm usually pretty good at guessing the plot, but I definitely didn't anticipate this storyline! I listened in one sitting because I simply couldn't put it down!

Bored 15 minutes into it.

Audible seriously needs to become acquainted with what makes a good thriller. Some of the things that they publish as their "Originals" are impossible to stay with.

As another reviewer said, the first few minutes of this story are full of indicators that this woman is making a bad choice. Too predictable.

I like the narrator's style. I don't need multiple voices to figure out who is speaking. in fact I find it distracting.

Retreat turned dangerous

During a yoga retreat to getaway from her thoughts she encounters a trespasser. All she wanted was a relaxing weekend instead Strange things happen to her.
A short audiobook thriller only available on audible. This short story packs a punch once the situation gets explained. The ball didn’t get rolling until part three but when it did the story came alive.
The short story includes three characters: Sebastian. Helen. Chloe.

Narrator:
Kate Mara is the solo female narrator. I listened at 1.8x speed. I listened using the audible app. Kate provided an excellent performance.

Righteously Creepy!

This story started out really good and was fantastically creepy. Unfortunately it seemed to have lost something towards the end, and I felt somewhat disappointed 😔. I very much enjoyed it for the most part, however, and would say it is definitely worth a listen. Narrator did a great job....☺️

Fun / easy

Good quick suspense novel. No twists /turns just plain vanilla. Reader was ok but constant mouth noises. Drives me crazy.

Oh. My. Gosh.

My heart is still pounding. This Audible Original kept me unwillingly riveted from its curiously innocent yet ominous beginning to its heart stopping ending. I usually avoid anything remotely this unsettling, so I was caught off guard by excellant reviews, the books short length (I mean, how frightening can any novel possibly be that only lasts a couple of hours?!?) and how quickly I got taken in by the relaxing yoga retreat introduction.
Just shows how naive a reader I have been!
