Publisher's summary

Learn to use your later years for awakening and spiritual growth.

Encouraging, inspiring, and practical, The Grace in Aging invites all those who have ever experienced spiritual longing to awaken in their twilight years. Since aging, in and of itself, does not lead to spiritual maturity, The Grace in Aging suggests and explores causes and conditions that we can create in our lives, just as we are living them, to allow awakening to unfold - transforming the predictable sufferings of aging into profound opportunities for growth in clarity, love, compassion, and peace.

Kathleen Dowling Singh streamlines vast and complex teachings into skillful means and wise views. Straightforward language and piercing questions bring Singh's teachings into the sharp focus of our own lives; the contemplative nature of each chapter allows for an uncommon depth of inquiry. Examples from our lives and from the chatter in our own minds touch the listener personally, offering the chance to absorb the implications deeply and do the work of freeing his or her own mind.

Ecumenical in spirit, tone, and language, Singh offers wisdom from teachers from a variety of spiritual backgrounds: Thich Nhat Hanh, the Apostles, Annie Dillard, and more. Lessening our attachments, decreasing our aversions, unbinding what binds us, we bear witness to the possibility of awakening for all beings. The Grace in Aging offers guidelines for older individuals of any wisdom tradition who wish to awaken before they die; no need for caves or seven-year retreats. This is spiritual practice for the lives we live.

A poetically read, inspiring invitation to life

One of the most rewarding and inspiring books I have listened to. Constance Jones' rich resonance, masterfully captures and conveys the authors many layers of wisdom, inviting contemplation to awaken as we grow older, experiencing aging more gracefully. I rarely listen twice to anything read, but the voice of Constance Jones reading and the Kathleen Dowling Singh's insights, creates a compelling invitation to listen, reflect, implement and repeat. It is an amazing work of art, truly a masterpiece that has aided me to better master peace and joy at this stage of my life. I highly recommend listening.

Just in time…

After living a stressful life of chasing money, raising children and being married and divorced I have longed for the wonderful opportunity to age gracefully and peacefully, and this book is a perfect guide for doing so. I listen to it and nod my head yes -1 this is it this is how I’m going to spend the last quarter of my football game. I think of it as the last 25 years of my life, hopefully 30 or 35 years, finally living in true peace every day. The best lesson I learned from this book was to let go, just let go and let the world be what it’s going to be and you be what you must be: a peaceful, calm and gracefully aging person.

Very helpful.

Helpful in examining possible blind spots that limit growth and in identifying the most important from the less important.

Overview of Mindfulness as it Relates to Aging

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I only gave it 4 stars, because much of the book is more of a review for folks already knowledgeable on Buddhist teachings and mindfulness. The parts on aging were a great discussion into aging mindfully, with meaningful examples.

Excellent!

I will listen again and again and again. So deep. Inspiring. Encouraging. Old age is a gift when we have the right vision.

Wonderfully helpful philosophy to the again proces

We have listened to this book twice and will start a third listening in a few weeks. The author presents a wonderful philosophy to the aging process linking it to the spiritual process and enlightenment needed to grasp this time of life. While the writing is inclusive to all faith traditions, it is heavily steeped in Buddhism. Unfortunately, the narrator doesn't do the writing justice! Not only does her voice not translate the meaning of the text, but she has difficulty pronouncing words. Words that include "ol" such as the word "older" are pronounced "oder" or "owder". It's as if she is unable to pronounce the letter "L". Enjoyed the book but not the narrator!

A great read for contemplating your senior years!

I thoroughly enjoyed both listening and reading this book. It really gave one pause to think about our existence and what it really means to be here and now in the life experience. I recommend it to anyone over 60!
