About this listen

On a muggy August day in 2001, Alexandra Lind was unexpectedly thrown backwards in time, landing in the year of Our Lord 1658. Catapulted into an unfamiliar and frightening new existence, Alex could do nothing but adapt. After all, while time-traveling in itself is a most rare occurrence, time-traveling with a return ticket is even rarer.

Fortunately for Alex, she lands at the feet of Matthew Graham. No woman could ask for a better guide or protector in this strange new world of hers. Unfortunately, Matthew comes with baggage of his own, and soon enough it will be her protecting him, just as much as he defends her.

This boxed set includes the first three books in The Graham Saga - all the way from how Alex first met Matthew, to their adventures in Colonial Virginia, and back to a Scotland torn apart by religious conflicts and English dragoons.

Fantastic story

I got this series on a whim because I was looking for another audio book and I got pulled into a whole other world. I loved Outlander and I found this series to be similar and completely different all at the same time.

Started slow, but I really bought into their world

At first, I thought this was an Outlander wannabe, but thus series addressed different issues in a very relatable way. i found myself caring about these people and their world

Don't choose these thinking they're like Outlander

Okay, so a time travel series where the female main character goes back to 17th century Scotland is appealing on the surface, but despite a fairly complex plot line and excellent narration with an authentic and delightfully deep-voiced brogue, the story is one painful struggle after another. According to the author, Matthew and Alex love each other but you don't FEEL that in the text. There are a few intimate scenes but they're mild in detail and VERY short on the emotion needed to convey their feelings toward each other. Nowhere did I sense the point where Alex falls in love - yes, she needs him for protection, but I continually found myself urging her to go back to her own time as Matthew breaks promise after promise, exhibits questionable judgment (over and over) and honestly doesn't seem worthy of her love whatsoever. Perhaps Matthew's attitude, and his end of their relationship, is expected based on his century, but I think one generally expects more depth (quality) of character in the male "hero" role in a romance-ish story line - not perfection, but a LOT closer to a trustworthy and dependable man than Matthew appears to be. (Matthew is certainly NOT a Jamie Fraser-caliber man) Alex *clearly* needs more from him and doesn't get it, yet she seems devoted nonetheless. Why?

The story is fairly interesting and not shallow, yet the characters are, in my opinion. There is no rise and fall of joy and sadness/despair - it's one horrible thing happening after another. I almost feel depressed after a listening session - who needs more of that than life already gives us!? I'm so disappointed in the characters, I won't be continuing this series - which is a shame, because I adore long story lines. I'll wait for the next Outlander installment.

Outlander Light

I purchased this series because it was on sale through one of the Audible summer sales. I love when I can get series because I prefer to have a full story rather than a single book at a time. When I first began the series, I wasn’t sure I was going to stick with it. It began VERY CONFUSING!! That was frustrating! But, I stayed with it and I’m sooooo glad I did! If you’re a fan of the Outlander series, you’re going to really like this series as it’s very similar. It begins in Scotland with Alex Lind falling through time, just like Clair Randall Fraiser in Outlander. However, Alex falls 400 years in the past. She lands at the feet of Matthew Graham, and with Matthew’s help, she learns to navigate the changes of the 17th century. She and Mathew spend the first 4 books in Scotland, and just like Clair and Jamie, end up in the American colonies. Navigating the political and social challenges of the early American colonies often proves challenging for the family and the friction with the church, a group of horrible bandits, and the Susquehanna Indians puts strains on Alex and Mathew’s bond.

This series has everything- love, loss, triumph, heartache, and brutality. If you are sensitive to sexual situations, this series is not for you. However, if you aren’t sensitive to that (and it’s not horrible or super graphic), I highly recommend this series to fill the void of not having Outlander to enjoy. This is a very interesting series that has filled me with hours of enjoyment.

One criticism is the narrator- having a man read this story was not a good choice as it is really Alex’s story. It should’ve been read by a woman. The narrator makes Alex sound nasily and whiny and she’s really not. Other than that, this is a great listen!

Graham Saga....

The narration is AMAZING!

Book 1- I enjoyed this book, though at times there were some rather outlandish twists and turns. That said, the attention to historical details was very well done. I was invested in the characters and it was fun to imagine how a 21st century woman would clash with the social rigors of the past.

Book 2 - Not as good as the first. While I was invested in seeing the story through, the plot seemed to loop in circles at times and it was frustrating to see the characters make the same mistakes over and over again. Alex lost some of her original shine, and while she remained outspoken she lacked the feminist charm she had in the first book.

Book 3- I have to say by this far into a series I have usually developed an affinity for the characters, but in this case I feel like the more time I spend with them the more irritated I get. These characters keep making the same mistakes, all be it in a different setting, and never seem to learn their lesson. The male protagonist is an absolute boar of a man whose personality encompasses everything wrong with a patriarchal society. The female lead has lost everything that made her so wonderful in the first book, doing nothing proactive to protect her family or better her situation. Even the sex scenes have become mundane and predictable. I cannot believe there are more books to come!

Graphic sex!

You may enjoy this book if you don’t have a sex life of your own. But I did not enjoy that part of it. The story was good.

Made it through the first book, but…

Need to add paranormal to the genres. Why does Time Travel have to be related to magic?!?! It took what could have been an excellent concept and made it ridiculous and irritating. And the F word was used much too frequently!
The narrator was good, I would definitely listen to other books he has narrated.
