About this listen

A Sweeping Saga

As the sole survivor of the car crash that killed her parents, grief-stricken paramedic Kit MacKlenna is stunned to learn her life is built on lies. A legacy from her father includes a faded letter and a well-worn journal. The journal reveals she was abandoned as a baby 160 years ago. The only clues to her identity are a blood-splattered shawl, a locket with the portrait of a 19th century man, and a Celtic brooch with magical powers. Kit decides to continue her father's 25-year search for her identity and solve her birth parents' murders.

Scotsman Cullen Montgomery, a San Francisco-bound lawyer who resembles the ghost who has haunted Kit since childhood, helps her join a wagon train heading west. More dangerous than the river crossings, bad water, and disease encountered on the trail is Cullen's determination to expose her lies and uncover the source of her unusual knowledge and lifesaving powers.

Kit is convinced that if she can survive the perilous journey and Cullen's accusations, as well as thwart his attempts to seduce her, she might solve the mystery of her heritage and return home without leaving her heart on the other side of time.

Exceptional Time Travel Story

The best time travel book I have listened to. Great entertainment!

The Ruby Brooch is a very unusual story about a 21st Century heiress who learns upon the death of her father and mother that she was not their natural daughter but left on their doorstep wrapped in a bloody shawl, along with a magical brooch and a locket with the picture of a man inside.

Kit had lost her fiance in the same car crash that killed the parents that raised her. Feeling like she had nothing to live for Kit travels back in time through the power of the brooch to try to find her birth parents. She takes a well stocked covered wagon, including medical supplies, pulled by 6 oxen, a thoroughbred horse she has raised since he was a colt, and her stowed away dog and cat with her.

She has quite an adventure as she joins a wagon train heading for Oregon; following a clue from a journal from the 1800s, that her birth parents may have been on a wagon train that was attacked by killers along the route they were taking.

The wagon train faces a cholera outbreak, buffalo stampede, storms. Kit falls in love for the first time in her life with Cullen Montgomery. After she loses Cullen she goes home to the 21st century until she receives a letter written 160 years ago; the content sending her on another quest.

The narrator gave an excellent performance.

I highly recommend "The Ruby Brooch" for anyone who likes historical romance and time travel.

An interesting love story.

Any additional comments?

An interesting take on the time travel genre. It really felt like it started as an Oregon Trail fan fiction, strange as that would have been. It had some interesting scenes and a cute little love story, but it felt like it dragged on a bit much. And there were weird scenes that didn't make sense. Like how Kit brings condoms and a pregnancy test to the past with her even though she was traumatized and a virgin. Did she want to blow her cover by explaining what the test did?

I really enjoyed listening to Teri Schnaubelt. She brought a lot of personality to the characters without drawing me out of the story. I didn't really like the accents as much.

An interesting love story.

Unbelievable!

I can suspend my disbelief better than anyone but really ... We're in 1852, she takes an iPhone and an iPod back with her? She can access a medical database in a time with no internet? No 3 or 4G? Spare me!!

Something's Missing

I like Logan's narrative style. Good details and character development. I wonder though, if there was a ham-fisted editing of this book. There seem to be whole swaths missing from the narrative. Did the editors remove bits to shorten it? I keep getting lulled into the story and then shaken with a jump either from scene to scene or even within them! Then characters lose motivation to do what they're doing and the piece doesn't hold together. Her writing is so good and the character hints so good that I've got to believe that someone just chose to leave parts out!

better accents please

i admit, I am a sucker for books about Scots. So in high hopes after a previous disaster, I purchased the ruby brooch. The story wasn't bad, I liked parts of it, though it is a bit formulaic. But please, audiobooks, find an actor who knows the difference between an Irish and a Scottish accent. it is the second book this month where I have cringed every time a Scot spoke.

I can't wait for the next installment!

Any additional comments?

What an enjoyable book! I enjoyed this from beginning to end and am excited to see it is the first of what I am guessing is a trilogy. I find going back in time with some 21st century items to be entertaining and deffinately life saving for them and the romance part to be enjoyable and engaging. Teri Schnaubelt as the actor is very talented, having no problems with individulal men and women's voices. Her voice fades easily to the background leaving me engaged with the characters. I look forward to the next installment
