Publisher's summary

Book 9 in the Ciaphas Cain series.

Hero of the Imperium, the legendary Commissar Ciaphas Cain, is back in the field, and this time he's facing down both the T'au Empire and the tyranids.

Listen to it because....

Treacherous t'au, terrifying tyranids and the irascible Commissar Cain – it all adds up to a classic tale from the master of Warhammer 40,000 comedy-action.

The story:

When the world of Quadravidia comes under attack by the insidious tau, only one man can defeat the aliens and save the planet in the Emperor's name – the legendary Hero of the Imperium, Commissar Ciaphas Cain. When the aliens call for a ceasefire, Cain expects the worst, and his fears are answered in the form of the dread menace of the tyranids. As a hive fleet approaches Quadravidia, Cain must try to forge an alliance between the Imperium and the t'au – but can he truly trust the inscrutable xenos?

Cain is back,still great.

If you've gotten this far into the series, you know what to expect. I felt this one was a little weak compared to previous ones, just due to how it wandered a little bit here and there from the main plot. The whole subplot with the tau... Wasn't really there in the latter half of the book. The issues that i have had in other cain books were actually slightly better, with the things that cain does over and over like saying "had i know then" and itching his palms coming less often.

The voice acting has been getting better and better in these books, with more voices for characters, the audio quality is crisp and well done. over all, if you are a cain fan, this book won't disappoint.

Great Cain Book, hardly any Tau

Another great Ciaphas Cain story, but despite the title and cover art the story the Tau only really make a few brief cameos. You go several hours without even hearing about them at all

Misleading tital and cover, barley any time spent with the only 2 fire warriors.

Underwhelming but I can't hate it.

Here's the thing
This book was written in 2013. Mitchell was probably running out of ideas and back then the universe was more static. But if GW had asked us to write a 9th Ciaphas Cain book, I doubt any of us could have done any better in those days.
Because all that being said, its SUPER weird this book is called 'The Greater Good' because the Tau are barely in it. When Cain met a human emissary born in the Tau Empire I thought we get to see him go down to a Tau planet and maybe have some of his preconceptions about the galaxy challenged. But instead we get another Genestealer "Who Done It":, which, while fun, we've seen Cain do SEVERAL times before.

least of a great series

the greater good was a decent book, but unlike most of the earlier books in the series i never laughed out loud doing the reading
the story is also far more predictible, all of its twists being pretty obvious
lastly the book is called for the greater good, and yet the Tau are barely in it which I tought was a damn shame
