About this listen

TEN DAYS, TWELVE COMPETITORS, TWO MILLION IN CASH. ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH.

What at first appears to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for Damien Banks turns out to be the worst nightmare imaginable. Trapped inside a house with eleven strangers, and a booming voice known only as 'The Landlord', he is forced to compete not only for the money but for his life. And the life of his best friend and mentor, Harry.

Damien can trust no one, that much is clear, especially now that a list of crimes has appeared on the wall: CHEAT, MURDERER, ABUSER, WHORE, TRAITOR, TRICKSTER, PEDDLER, PREDATOR, CRUSADER, THIEF.

What does the list mean, and who is the Landlord? Only time will tell, but Damien must make sure that he ends up the winner, because all of the losers are dead. Let the games begin. Are you ready?

The Housemates is the most twisted book yet from Horror Mastermind, Iain Rob Wright. Fans of the Saw movie franchise and lovers (or haters) of reality TV will delight in the tortures that await them. An unforgettable tale of squeamish horror. Buy your copy today.

Over the years I have read and enjoyed quite a few books by Iain Rob Wright, but this one...wow. He really pushes things with The Housemates. It's tagged as ' A novel of extreme terror' but I'm not sure that's completely accurate,. Extreme? Yes indeed. Terror? Maybe but not in the traditional sense, at least not how I consider horror, And don't get me wrong, this is not a complaint, I just want people to know what they are in for when they jump into this one. Which is? Extreme brutality. This is Saw level brutality or even Terrifier. You will definitely be made uncomfortable while listening to this one, which is entirely the point. A group of people enter a house, thinking they are entering a reality show competition..which they are, they just don't realize the stakes are to be their very lives, and they have no idea what they'll have to do and endure to reach the end. Wright has never been shy about being graphic is his books when need be, but he definitely takes it up a few notches in The Housemates. The 'games' these characters must endure are wildly brutal, and I must admit I really enjoyed the ride. (not sure what that says about me, lol). I'd definitely recommend this one for people who enjoy extremely violent/graphic thrillers. Aubrey Parsons does a fine job bringing these brutal games to life.

Horrible people doing horrible things to each other. Should we actually care who "wins"? Hard to feel sorry for any of them.

Brutal Scenes

I enjoyed this take on the strangers stuck in a house together trope. They think they are there for a reality TV show only to find out that there is more to the house than meets the eye

A fun take on an old trope!

some of his narrations have too heavy of an accent for me, this one is great though.

Great story, great narration.

Housemates "competed" in deadly challenges (and were immediately "eliminated" if they refused to play) in a game that was portrayed to "contestants" as a new reality show...until they realized the game was very real. Think of game/reality shows like "Survivor" and "Big Brother" with a deadly twist! So good, if you are a fan of the previously mentioned shows or the "Saw" franchise, you'll love it!

Sooo Good!! Wish I could give 10 stars!!

Nicely dark with a visceral feel to the violent twistiness; junk food thrills. I enjoyed Housemates but it has an empty quality to it - a bit too bleak and nihilistic, which I am here for but doesn’t really feel creatively macabre enough so it comes across a bit artless more as a mimic/parody of other stuff. The best part is how when it seems it could end it continues thankfully abandoning cliché at a point. For much of the run the premise is derivative after the ‘torture porn’ boom; lampooning reality tv feels like shallow stuff (reality tv itself being a parody). Despite some lukewarm ideas the execution is pulpy and tense, well paced and it engaged me. There is a subtle theme of redemption here but the moral issues are exaggerated and there isn’t much a relatable gradient of shame/guilt (which is maybe the point – a meta nod to shallow characterization in entertainment); there are times the book seems to be saying something about morality but then it tanks the thread to do something superficially surprising or shocking. This is a fourth book in a ‘Damienverse’ series; it doesn’t seem to have a lot of obvious references to prior books. The narration is good, Aubrey Parsons has a charming accent.
