Publisher's summary

A mysterious worldwide epidemic reduces the birthrate of female infants from 50 percent to less than one percent. Medical science and governments around the world scramble in an effort to solve the problem, but 25 years later there is no cure, and an entire generation grows up with a population of fewer than 1000 women.

Zoey and some of the surviving young women are housed in a scientific research compound dedicated to determining the cause. For two decades, she's been isolated from her family, treated as a test subject, and locked away - told only that the virus has wiped out the rest of the world's population.

Captivity is the only life Zoey has ever known, and escaping her heavily armed captors is no easy task, but she's determined to leave before she is subjected to the next round of tests...a program that no other woman has ever returned from. Even if she's successful, Zoey has no idea what she'll encounter in the strange new world beyond the facility's walls. Winning her freedom will take brutality she never imagined she possessed, as well as all her strength and cunning - but Zoey is ready for war.

A new take on the Handmaidens tale...

I loved it. I don't know why there were negative reviews. I'm glad I decided to listen anyway. If you are interested in dystopia fiction then this is for you. Enjoy!

Narrator is annoying.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Girl to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print version.

What other book might you compare The Last Girl to and why?

I don't know.

What didn’t you like about Dara Rosenberg’s performance?

She pronounces "ing" words with a "k" sound on the end of the word. Very annoyingK.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

No.

Great!!

I really enjoyed the strength of the main character. She embodied all of what mankind holds dearest the freedom to choose for one's self.

It didn't show as a trilogy till now.

It was a cute story with a nice concept. Let's see how far it will go.

The reader is terrible.

A reader can make or break the experience of the story. I'm going to have to read this instead of listen to it. The reader's voice is strident, the reading over acted. No nuance. It makes the story feel simplistic and doesn't allow me to form an opinion on the writing. It's like she's reading it for an extremely young audience and she's performing the words so you can imagine their meaning and how they're spelled.

Suspend disbelief, and your common sense.

I understand this is supposedly post Apocalypto of some kind but it is one of the worst stories I have read with no stable plot. I hate having a pretty good understanding of how babies are made and how the sex is dictated. It was so many flaws within the scientific part of the story, and character development. They never once looked at all the men that was inhabiting the earth in droves. The story had too many holes, and nothing was tied up at the end of the book.
