Publisher's summary

Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.

Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.

On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.

Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within ninety-two hours, the fog will smother the island—and everyone on it.

But the security system has also wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer—and they don't even know it.

And the clock is ticking.

How will humanity end?

This novel has an intricate and interwoven plot. There is detailed and colorful character development. The descriptions of humanity’s flaws and ultimate self destructive tendencies are sad but is there an ultimate hopeful message?

It is never what you think…

Great narration of an amazing story. Amazing world building and fleshed out flawed characters. And the plot twists keep coming. Just when I thought I had figured it out it was not what I thought!

sci-fi mystery with constant revelations, twists, and turns

I loved this book! Very high-concept, but every element is set up well in advance with enough time to absorb them before the mysteries start calling. I enjoyed the very unique combination of first-person and third-person omniscient points of view, which allows clues/facts to be delivered to the reader in a very natural way. The story is fast paced without ever blurring out the clues and conclusions - which in this mystery are delivered consistently, rather than having a singular parlor scene. There's a great sense of the characters building and amending their theory of the case as the facts pile up.

only major downside for me was my personal distaste for the audiobook's narration - the way the narrator delivers most character voices sounds like how you would mock somebody's voice when you're imitating them. Somewhat hurt the experience for me, and I plan to stick with reading Turton's works in the future.

Another twisty tale

Another great story from such a super imagination. The voices from the narrator will take you back to some of the characters in Evelyn Hardcastle’s Blackheath. Such fun.

Another amazing mystery by Turton.

I love the way he tells a story. The character feel like people you know and the setting is dynamic.

Edge of my seat the whole time!

This just kept me guessing until the end, like Stuart’s other two books. I went to the store to see the physical copy and it has a map in the front cover!

An immensely exciting third book from Turton!

If you’ve read either of Stuart Turton’s other books and enjoyed them, you’ll like this one too. It has his custom blend of a mind-bending detective novel, an entirely unique setting, a ticking clock, an arguably unreliable narrator, and a plot line that keeps you guessing right up to the end. The prose is inventive and occasionally delightfully whimsical. You may find the narration stilted at first, but give it a little time and I think you’ll find that it’s well suited to Turton’s narrative style.

What I really love about this book is its introspective exploration of morality, goodness and what it means to be human. As soon as I finished the book I went in for another listen, not just to pick apart the threads of the mystery now that I know the answer, but to sit with the book’s message and consider it more deeply. The book is a little dense and packed with more detail than I could hold in my mind at one time, so I recommend giving it your full attention. But it’s entirely worth it if you’re looking for a story that is fun, exciting, and deep. It’ll leave you pondering the question of what the world might look like if we collectively and individually gave power to kindness over violence.

Narrator - why?

While I’ve no doubts this narrator is perfect for other audiobooks, this was a terrible choice. Both protagonists were female, as well as the majority of supporting characters. Having a female narrator would have made the benign malice of Abi and the benign innocence of Emory so much more. This narrator did his best, but was all wrong and took away so much from what would have been a 4 or 5 star listen.

So good!!!

Another winner! This book had me hooked from The beginning and I hated having to sleep bc I couldnt put it down! The beginning starts off a bit confusing trying to understand so people are but stick with it because it's sooo worth it!

The post apocalyptic existence the author imagined.

I liked how Mr Turton wove the thread of self sacrifice throughout the novel and gave it an honorable placement with the main characters and the Villagers.
