About this listen

Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.

Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.

On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.

Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within ninety-two hours, the fog will smother the island—and everyone on it.

But the security system has also wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer—and they don't even know it.

And the clock is ticking.

How will humanity end?

This novel has an intricate and interwoven plot. There is detailed and colorful character development. The descriptions of humanity’s flaws and ultimate self destructive tendencies are sad but is there an ultimate hopeful message?

Not for me

I think I just didn’t get this book. The story just didn’t engage me. I didn’t find the characters engaging. I didn’t get the work.
I realize how difficult it is to create work like this, but it was not appealing.

Narrator - why?

While I’ve no doubts this narrator is perfect for other audiobooks, this was a terrible choice. Both protagonists were female, as well as the majority of supporting characters. Having a female narrator would have made the benign malice of Abi and the benign innocence of Emory so much more. This narrator did his best, but was all wrong and took away so much from what would have been a 4 or 5 star listen.

Meh

Decent story and character development occasional twists, just not a great read but good enough to occupy me

Edge of my seat the whole time!

This just kept me guessing until the end, like Stuart’s other two books. I went to the store to see the physical copy and it has a map in the front cover!

An immensely exciting third book from Turton!

If you’ve read either of Stuart Turton’s other books and enjoyed them, you’ll like this one too. It has his custom blend of a mind-bending detective novel, an entirely unique setting, a ticking clock, an arguably unreliable narrator, and a plot line that keeps you guessing right up to the end. The prose is inventive and occasionally delightfully whimsical. You may find the narration stilted at first, but give it a little time and I think you’ll find that it’s well suited to Turton’s narrative style.

What I really love about this book is its introspective exploration of morality, goodness and what it means to be human. As soon as I finished the book I went in for another listen, not just to pick apart the threads of the mystery now that I know the answer, but to sit with the book’s message and consider it more deeply. The book is a little dense and packed with more detail than I could hold in my mind at one time, so I recommend giving it your full attention. But it’s entirely worth it if you’re looking for a story that is fun, exciting, and deep. It’ll leave you pondering the question of what the world might look like if we collectively and individually gave power to kindness over violence.

Wow!

Another classic, I always feel a bit empty after finishing a Turton novel, so good I’m depressed thinking I have to wait a few years for the next great one.

Interesting plot

Distracting , overdone vocals. Most of the time I adapt to the narrator’s reading…this one. It so much.

Confusing narration

The narrator should be female. I had to ask a friend, who had read the paperback, for clarification a few chapters in.

Lofty ambitions, middle ground results

This story tries to do a lot and covers some interesting topics, but ultimately crumbles a bit under the weight of all it tries to achieve. The plot twists eventually felt like random turns rather than intertwined events. As a fan of his other books, I was left a bit underwhelmed, but will probably listen to the next one (even though the female character voices are pretty tough to hang in with).
