A young recruit. A legendary battle. A cataclysmic war. A baptism by fire....

Kelly Maguire knew from a young age that he could accomplish great things. As World War I begins, Kelly enlists in the Royal Navy, hoping to win both the war and glory.

But from the barbarous battles of Gallipoli to the nightmarish action of Antwerp, Kelly learns the trials a soldier must face: trials that will forge him into a man. As the epic battle of Jutland approaches, everything is at stake.

the courage and humanity of the protagonist

The evolution of Young Kelly from a cynical, insecure boy, estranged from his patriarchy and mother into the courageous yet modest Captain of men was a beautiful, yet masterfully written, believable story.

I loved the 2 supporting characters as much. The loyal and lovable Garello was like Samwise to his Frodo in their affection and friendship.

But the Young teenage beauty snd childhood playmate Charlie was as rich in character.
This must be made into a screenplay a la Winds of War.

Absolutely wonderful and revealing!

I loved the whole story and whether all of this really happened to one person or it happened to several people and was combined, it's an amazing account. I lived every Adventure ride along with Charlie.

Great story and great narrative

I’ve listened to this book 3 times now. I wish that the narrator would read some more Max Hennessy books

Different take on British naval history

I do not know much about British naval history around World War I. This is very informative.

Great Navy Tale

Young Kelly Maguire must prove himself as an officer in the Royal Navy of WW1. He rises to the challenge and starts his slow rise through the ranks. A compelling story with enough history, action, and romance to hold my interest. Narration is excellent including good work on nautical terms and giving each character a distinctive voice.

Very good.

Marred by narrators mispronunciation of a lot of names: e.g, Harwich and Rosythe. Otherwise excellent.
