About this listen

The Living Gita is a translation of, and commentary on, the Bhagavad Gita by Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the world’s most respected Yoga masters. The Gita is the summary and essence of Eastern spiritual wisdom, drawn from the Hindu tradition. When Swami Satchidananda arrived in the West in 1966, he recognized the need to make the teachings of Yoga and this classic text accessible to modern readers and listeners. He soon began giving talks on the Gita, which became the foundation for The Living Gita, first published in 1988.

Swami Satchidananda became such a beloved teacher because of his genius for clarifying the most obscure or arcane teachings with words and stories that enable the listener to access the deep wisdom they contain. This presentation of The Gita is true to the spirit and, in most cases, to the letter of the original texts. It is not intended primarily for scholars, however. Rather, this is a practical manual on how to live in joy and freedom - wherever you are, and whatever you may be doing in life.

As you listen to the text, recognize that the battle is not external but internal. Remove all biases and receive this, not as dogma, but as an evolving lesson to grow from experience. The purpose of “religion” Is to bring one back to self. To remember and to shed the layers we’ve been taught to believe. We already know, we just need to empty our cup so we can remember.

The essence is the message
