The little bit of truth within the fiction

The complexities of people’s lives within the war . It is not just about a spy it’s about how people live, they love , finding bits of happy moments a mist the horrors and atrocities committed .
What they did to survive and making hard decisions. We see everything through Slims eyes as we take the journey with her. And meet all these different people.
If you like period drama and spy drillers this is a great story and I did enjoy how it was narrated

Enjoyable

Enjoyed listening to this story. Certainly not the best. Not sure if it wanted to be a crime book or historical fiction

Characters boring.

Lack of a plot?? It seemed a story similar to other WW2 spy stories. Not engaging

Nope. Nope. Nope.

I really tried but could no longer continue. You can’t lean on a one-time witnesses who remembers a random train passenger from years earlier simply because it’s an easy plot catalyst to save your heroine.

Disrespectful to the memory of the Holocaust

Kate Moira Ryan can write decently enough, but she should NOT write historical novels. Her research was fairly well done, she got the major facts about the time period correct, but many of the details were simply filled in by assumption and grossly incorrect. Clearly she read lists of facts about the war and the Holocaust, but it is equally obvious that she did not emerse herself in the history of the Holocaust. Her "accounts" of the victims of the concentration camps were inaccurate and have been explicitly denied by actual survivors, whose stories are easily obtained. Her portrayal of the people glosses over, white washes, and blatantly contradicts the attitude of society. She was far more interested in creating a tantalizing "spicy" romance than accuracy, and she could have done so with success had she not chosen to write about the Holocaust. It is disrespectful and untrue.

The narrator is equally matched. Her accents are off, and every character either sounds like a breathy sex goddess or a slimy villain.

The acts of treason and betrayal with innocent people dying

What I really disliked was the lesbian love . I’ve listened to many books about female spies in ww2. But it seemed a central theme in this book. If there is a follow-up I will not bother to listen to it. Lesbianisn was never mentioned in the sample. By the way I found d a lot of the story boring and skipped many chapters and didn’t feel like I missed much. Will not read this author again .its a pity cause it had such potential and such an interesting subject . Throwing Marlena Dietrich in didn’t make it any better
