About this listen

On the eve of World War II, a honeymoon turns treacherous.

For Stella Bled Lawrence, being wealthy and stylish in 1938 is exactly what it's cracked up to be. She's blissfully unaware of the rising tensions in Europe even as she travels to Vienna on the eve of the Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

Stella and her husband, Nicky, witness the night's atrocities firsthand. Even as they watch the horror, they never imagine it will touch them personally, a pair of wealthy Americans on their honeymoon, but touch them it does.

In the chaotic aftermath, Stella finds passion and purpose in the form of a package with a Paris address. She promises to deliver it, not knowing what it contains or who wants it. Soon, Stella must decide who and what she's willing to sacrifice to keep a secret that has been quietly guarded for 500 years.

Unexpected Spies

Stella and Nicky are newly weds on their honeymoon in Europe when the Nazi's are starting their rampage. And who should get in the middle of a cat and mouse chase but this young married couple. I don't think I'd like to be Stella's friend because you could end up dead. But she is an precocious, stubborn, determined young woman who will do whatever it takes to keep her promises to her friends. It does end a little bit on a cliffhanger, so you do have to read the next. Justine Eyre id a great job narrating all the voices. Made the story come alive.

Fantastic

I loved everything about this book. The adventures and the characters. The narrator was great too. As soon as I finished I started the next book!

Infuriatingly Good

This is one of those books where you want to reach inside and shake some sense into the heroine. A naive couple on their honeymoon get far more than they bargain for as they are chased by NAZI’s across Europe. As the book went on, it kept getting better as the plot unfolded and the main characters “wised up”. Narration was well done and I very much enjoyed the listen.

OK BUT IT DEFINES FICTION

Fiction ...go to occupied Paris and est buttery croissants and have enough steak to put it on a black eye After you have jumped in a taxi, sat in a traffic jam and then slalomed through this same traffic. Totally unbelievable story full of the author's idealised idea of Europe and who cares if it is historically inaccurate. Writing this with 30 minutes to go but I shan't be listening to the next one despite the up in the air ending. The heroine is so unreal I couldn't give a fig. ...but then that is fiction!

Constantly moving

I did not like the constant action that was unrealistic. I loved the narrator and did begin to like the main character Stella

Disappointing ending

considering the topic it ended up being a great read with a lot of interesting twists. I really enjoyed reading it, however, was so disappointed with the flat ending. They could’ve joined the resistance or many other endings but it didn’t work.

Very good

Overall the story was interesting, action kept everything moving well, the ending left too many loose ends. I love the characters but again too much left up in the air or not well explained at the end.
Justine Eyre is an excellent narrator and I will be looking for more books that use her unique style!

Beyond Excellent WW2 Historical fiction

Right up there with The Alice Network, Ragged Edge of Night, Beneath a Scarlet Sky! I loved this book and the characters. I found myself sitting in my garage listening because I didn’t wanna stop! Best new author! (New to me)!
