About this listen

Never pretty enough to please her gorgeous mother, Allie will do anything to gain her approval - even marry a man she doesn't love.

Lt. Walter Novak - fearless in the cockpit but hopeless with women - takes his last furlough at home in California before being shipped overseas.

Walt and Allie meet at a wedding and their love of music draws them together, prompting them to begin a correspondence that will change their lives. As letters fly between Walt's muddy bomber base in England and Allie's mansion in an orange grove, their friendship binds them together.

But can they untangle the secrets, commitments, and expectations that keep them apart?

This book is cunning, heart-warming, and aggravating. I loved the two main characters but boy are they dense. I get the message about honesty and the character growth, but it took way too long for either of them to figure it out. It was a bit ridiculous and frustrating that they kept doing such stupid stuff. And the ending dragged out way too long and was a bit convoluted. I don’t think real people that really felt the way they did would have been so dense and unable to see reality. I know the author needed to make problems to cause the characters to grow, but I don’t think anyone could really be that bad at misunderstanding God’s plans (like forcing you to marry someone you don’t love and isn’t a Christian in order to convert them-really?!) or taking so long to figure out lying isn’t a helpful option. The beginning of the book was so cute and sweet and I was hooked and loved the story, however, the main characters could have learned their lessons a lot quicker and been honest with themselves and each other.

Great story, great characters, but stupid decisions

The story was delightful and kept my interest all the way to the end. The end was satisfying. The narrator was excellent.

Sooo good!

The last 3 chapters nearly killed me, between what he did and what she did not see that coming. I would definitely recommend this book.

SHE DID WHAT?!?

I really enjoyed this book. And I recommend reading it. The core of the story line was good. Baxter and her parents were a bit over done. But that was ok. But there were just way too many different obstacles thrown in the paths of the lovers. Over and over and overdone. It was like a play when the villain was mortally wounded but he kept popping up again. Over and over until your tired of it. It made the last part of the book tiresome. But finally the happy ending came. I will read another by this author.

Very good romance but too drawn out

While I definitely like historical fiction, this story focused a lot more on God and scripture than many.

if that works for you don't hesitate to reach for this audiobook.

Kept my Interest Though Predictable

This is the third book by Sarah Sundin I’ve listened to. First being “With Every Letter”, and second “When Tides Turn”. And “A Distant Melody” is my favorite so far. It had me I laughing out loud, holding my breath, and crying at times. I love the era of these stories. That being said, while the settings and certain circumstance may be in a different time period and some aspects unrelatable, the emotions, mistakes, hopes, sorrows and joys of Sarah Sundin’s characters are very relatable and lovely to listen to.

I definitely recommend this Audiobook!
P.s. the Narrator did a great job!

Favorite so far!

This is a lovely love story. What’s more important is that it reminds us of the importance of trust and faith even when it is hard to stand up for what it is right. I am moving on to volume 2. ❤️

Great plot, loved the twist

I thoroughly love Sarah Sundin. I love being whisked away to an era in some ways similar to now- strange and trying times. The book helped remind me COVID will come to an end much like the war and there is good in the midst of hard times. Loved listening to the book while commuting to work and putting the baby to bed.

Wonderful book to escape in.
