About this listen

In 1944, blonde and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hide behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric's secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz. Suspecting that her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric's compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she should despise as an enemy.

Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp's prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she is unable to save herself?

For Such a Time

A riveting story. The style left a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. Truly a surprise ending. I don't know which was the happiest moment, Captain Hermann's death or the surprise ending. My God given path of Guardian makes me lean toward Hermann's death, yet I am torn between the two. Kate is a classmate of mine and I love her work dearly.

Interesting story, good effort, but I’m sorry, for me it fell flat

The story is interesting. A disillusioned soldier in a horrible dilemma … die or kill thousands of others. Added depth because he was betrayed by his own father. Still and Morty were also compelling characters, and the parallels to Esther were clever. But, the outcome was super unrealistic bordering on silly. It felt like I endured all of the suspense only to roll my eyes. Sometimes the suspense was stretched out offensively like a soap opera… That suspense included the characters becoming so incapable of expressing their feelings, or anything for that matter, so much so that you wonder if they are low IQ…. That inability to communicate effectuated the unrealistic, syrupy barfy end.

I know the author tried and the first part of the book was terrific I. But, ultimately it fell apart, including that you hated Stella/Hadasa because she was an overly emotional idiot.

Also, the narrator was pretty good at times but she mispronounced several words, repeatedly, and that was distracting

Holocaust as Hallmark Movie

I read this book to see for myself what the controversy was all about. This story was so poorly constructed (and I imagine researched) that it wasn’t so much an outrage as it was just silly. Every cliche was thrown in and only served to underscore the shallow characters and the laughably implausible plot.

Loved it! Just a few things…

This book kept me absolutely fascinated, except towards the end it got a bit long. I’ve just recently discovered Kate Breslin. What a writer. I did get a little tired at the end of Haddassah’s quivering, shrieking voice- other than that the narrator was great. I also felt, for people who were trying to be followers of God, and just for the whole context of the story, there was too much killing at the end. Not so much the “distant” killing of a bunch of troops, but the hand to hand on the train…more personal, close up. However, I realize that there was also a tremendous amount of desperation and the desire to save people at the end which sort of justified the means per se. The comparison between Esther’s story and this one was well done!

Another Esther story!

While this was not my favorite, it was worth listening to, for me.

This story was very much an Esther story, and a bit Joan of Arc. I don’t like copycat stories. Especially when they attempt to mimic true biblical stories, but leave out significant events, such as the importance of fasting and praying, and that it was not Esther who delivered her people, it was God! The way it was written was too melodramatic for me, and placed sensuality above sound mind.

As for whether or not someone in her position would fall for someone in his position, one only has to study Stockholm syndrome to know that this is a plausible scenario. The attempt at shaming this author for conceiving of such a relationship shows ignorance of this psychological phenomenon.

This narrator was just barely above my threshold for continuing to listen. While her natural tone is not unpleasant, her voices for male characters need much work! Her acting is a bit melodramatic, which detracts from the story. Additionally, it is such a shame that they did not select a narrator who could bring out the richness of this story with characters who would have German, Yiddish, Czech, and Polish accents. She does not use these accents as the better narrators do. It makes it difficult to keep track of who is from which country and what role they play in the story.
