About this listen

New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker wraps up her steamy Game of Chance series with an explosive novel about an ex-soldier fighting to save the woman he loves—even if she can’t remember him.

A game of chance during a horrific POW experience decided the future for Jackson “JJ” Justice and his teammates. Years later, they’re well settled into their lumberjack business in small-town Maine. And for nearly as long, JJ’s been pining for April, the woman largely responsible for growing their business, but insecurities keep him at arm’s length from the sexy receptionist.

April Hoffman loves her job…and her boss. She’s unsure where JJ’s head is at, but for her part, she knows exactly why she’s not revealed her feelings. Not only does she have one failed relationship under her belt, she’s also several years older than JJ. Why would a man so brutally hot settle for someone almost past her prime?

After a car accident nearly takes April’s life, leaving her with temporary amnesia, they both understand what they almost lost. The floodgates are open, their feelings exposed…but it may be too little, too late.

An enemy from JJ’s past has come calling, putting not only his future happiness on the line, but the lives of several people he holds dear—starting with April.

Critic reviews

“Mackenzie Cartwright and Teddy Hamilton join forces to portray the romance between Jackson Justice and April Hoffman.… Hamilton projects all of Jackson's masculinity, along with a softer voice for April. Cartwright gives April softness and Jackson strength…. Both narrators bring quiet menace to the threatening situation that develops.” AudioFile Magazine

Finally JJ and April

I loved, loved this friends to lovers, older MCs, amnesia, romantic suspense tale. It is a heartwarming, spicy, and exciting story that is beautifully told through the eyes of two intense, strong and passionate characters. JJ and April are portrayed as real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. JJ co-owns a tree service company in a small town in Maine with his three best friends. He is a former special forces soldier and was a POW. April is a middle aged divorcé and has been the administrative assistant to Jack’s Lumber for the last five years. JJ and April have been in love with each other for years but neither one has acted on the attraction for reasons. Until April is in a car accident and suffers from amnesia. As JJ takes care of April and finally admits his feelings they seem to be heading for their HEA until evil from JJ’s past comes for them. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and a captivating storyline. The suspense was well balanced with the romance creating a perfect contrast. The story will give you all the deep emotions - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, knuckle biting, and cheering through sweet moments, steamy scenes, chuckles, supportive friends, messy families, painful pasts, dangerous situations, uber protective men, and all the love. I have loved these characters and am sorry to see the end of this series.

Mackenzie Cartwright and Teddy Hamilton did a phenomenal job narrating the stories and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

a wild ride of an ending to this brilliant series. The narratives are amazing.

Jack (JJ) and April have been dancing around their attraction and feelings for each other throughout this series. In this final book, they finally come clean and admit how they feel. How they’ve felt for almost 5 years now. But it’s not an easy go of it. April has an accident and loses her memory for a time. That makes Jack realize he’s wasted so much time being afraid to act on his feelings and now he has to navigate carefully as April recovers.

This is definitely my favorite of the series, although it has more danger for all the characters and my heart was in my throat for much of this story. Jack and his team have their past come back to haunt them, their women being used to trap them, it’s all heart wrenching suspense.

Finally, the epilogue touches on the future for every duo and its perfection. This series is another must read of Susan’s. Don’t miss it.

what a way to end the series! 💥🔥💥🔥

JJ and April: (triggers: pranks, assault, kidnapping, explosives, POW, military, car accident, amnesia) I loved this book, it brought the entire series full circle for me. So S.S. picks up the story right where the previous book ends, with April in a car accident. She's now in the hospital and has amnesia. JJ realizes now that life is too short and is determined to take what is his. But the four couples don't get to be happy for too long because someone is out for vengeance against the four men and they don't even see him coming. This book will have you in awe, as you will laugh, cry, get a little angry and very hot. This is probably my favorite book of this series. April is the star of this book, she doesn't allow her circumstances to make her a victim, she takes the punches and keeps fighting to the very end which is why she is so perfect for JJ, the leader of this former Delta crew. Really great series. I also enjoyed seeing some of her more prominent characters jump in the fray as well. So much action. Love it.

Exciting

This story, Last in the Game of Chance series, was exciting and extremely scary. Be sure to read series from Book 1.
Side note: the Cinderella story of Cal and June (book 2) includes mention of Cal’s homeland, the tiny country of Liechtenstein. When I read The Royal, I had never heard of Liechtenstein. This summer, I was blessed to travel to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Germany. Neat to see the castle and spend time in Vaduz

Loved it!

A perfect finale to another excellent series by one of my favorite authors. Also loved the cameos by some of my other favorite characters in Stoker's world.

Disappointed

Not near as good as I thought it would be. The first three books were way much better.
