About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Goldy Moldavsky delivers a deliciously twisty YA thriller that's Scream meets Karen McManus about a mysterious club with an obsession for horror.

When it comes to horror movies, the rules are clear:

  • Avoid abandoned buildings, warehouses, and cabins at all times.
  • Stay together: Don’t split up, not even just to “check something out”.
  • If there’s a murderer on the loose, do not make out with anyone.

If only surviving in real life were this easy....

New girl Rachel Chavez turns to horror movies for comfort, preferring stabby serial killers and homicidal dolls to the bored rich kids of Manhattan Prep...and to certain memories she’d preferred to keep buried.

Then Rachel is recruited by the Mary Shelley Club, a mysterious society of students who orchestrate Fear Tests, elaborate pranks inspired by urban legends and movie tropes. At first, Rachel embraces the power that comes with reckless pranking. But as the Fear Tests escalate, the competition turns deadly, and it’s clear Rachel is playing a game she can’t afford to lose.

Not my type of book.

Not into others getting hurt or killed for stupid reasons. No wonder there is so much violence with our teens today if they read these kind of books.

Truly twisty tale for lovers of final girls

Smart and cinematic, this page turner is something totally new. There are lots of allusions for hardcore horror fans, but plenty of thrills for any reader. Has a diverse cast of characters with a female lead who feels real.

Not bad, not great

First, the narration. Carla Corvo was very teenager sounding, which led to a very authentic experience.

Story wise, this was…fine. It was an interesting premise, but I pegged the “bad guy” early, and there were still a lot of weird loose ends that didn’t get tied up. Maybe a sequel is in the works, who knows. But things were slow or steady and then wrapped incredibly quickly without all of the resolution I wanted.

Good story, narrator ruins it.

This story has a lot of potential, however I could not finish this book because of the narrator. She makes them sound extremely immature and cry baby like. Almost cringe city! I will be buying and reading instead.

Good book, not horror

I was looking for horror, this was not it. It was an entertaining story, just more mystery than anything else.

TERRIBLE narrator. Listen was excruciating.

The story was ok, but the narrator ruined the whole book for me. Sometimes it just takes some time to get used to the narrator when you start a new book, but MY GOD she was bad to the very end.

Absolutely Horrible Narration

This was a good book. Great story. The narration is horrible. I managed to white knuckle my way through listening to the bad 80s valley girl that read the story,

Fan of horror, a bit cheesy but a good read

If you’re a horror fan, you probably can see a couple of things coming but don’t worry it won’t spoil the ending. Some scenes and characters behavior are a bit exaggerated, for example Felicity she just screams the emo weird girl in hs or Lux is the stereotypical mean girl. Overall the story was entertaining. I’d recommend it for someone who is familiar with horror so you can see more of the trops in the fear tests and in the story.

Solid YA slasher-thriller; interesting twist on what makes a Final Girl

I think this is one of my recent favorites; if you’re a fan of Scream, the genre in general, or the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder books, this will probably hit the spot!
