About this listen

In a world increasingly divided by politics and social issues, we need Mister Rogers more than ever. For three decades, his presence was a healing balm to children of all ages. And though he is no longer with us, we can all adopt his attitudes and actions as models for our own lives.

In this uplifting and informative book, Dr. Anita Knight Kuhnley shows us how to use the transformative psychological principles that Mister Rogers masterfully employed to make a difference in our own neighborhoods. Principles such as listening for discovery, validating feelings, preserving white space, expressing gratitude, exercising empathy, practicing radical acceptance, and using expressions of care.

Imagine a world where these seven principles guide our interactions with each other. Sound heavenly? Neighborly? It all starts with you.

Well done, neighbor!

This book was wonderfully written! Growing up with Mr. Rogers myself and being an early childhood educator, all of what Fred Rogers stood for resonates with me as one who strives to find the good and love everyone. This is a must read for anyone wanting to be inspired by goodness and aspires to be a kind human. Worth the time spent! Kuhnley shared details and anecdotes that deepened my admiration for Mr. Fred Rogers. Kudos!

Much better than I expected

I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but it was free, and the description looked intriguing.
It was excellent! I would even say it’s a must read for everybody. Thought-provoking, easy to follow, lots of great points. One of those books that gets your mind going, and you will probably think back to it many times for the rest of your life.

This is helpful in thinking about oneself and those whom I can “love into becoming.”

Who will step up?

The 70s was the decade of the latchkey kids. A sharp increase in divorce and two-income households led to a whole generation who spent an unprecedented amount of time home alone. Mr. Rogers spoke to these kids and assured them that they were loved.

2020 will launch the decade of the Isolated Generation, made up of kids who spend a tremendous amount of time separated from others. Parents and siblings, although perhaps in the same house, are sequestered behind locked doors as they work and attend school remotely, leaving young kids to be entertained and amused as they sit idly in front of a screen. Now is the time for someone to step up and take the baton handed off by Mr. Rogers. To speak a message of kindness and care to the isolated, lonely and many times hurting kids of our neighborhood.

Who will begin creating and making available content for kids that is positive, life-giving and reminds kids that they are special, accepted and loved?

Look for the helpers

This book is so incredibly moving and perfectly written. Sometimes the world feels a little too dark and angry. Mr Rogers taught us that when things are that way to look for the the helpers. Dr. Anita Knight allowed us to understand the magic that Mr. Rogers shared with the world. That we aren’t alone and we are special just the way we are right now. This book is like a warm cup of coco for the soul. I’ve read it so many times and every time I feel like I can become a better person every day even if it’s just a little bit. Thank you Dr. Anita for being an amazing helper

Recommend Book

Excellent information .... good reminders to access person before judging. Does person struggle with PTSD? Was person unloved all his life? Fred Rogers offers many good strategies how to better address individuals. When reading book I felt like I was in a college psychology class...grab a pencil and paper ready to take notes. “I like you just the way you are!” Thank you Mr. Rogers for 800 impacting TV shows!

Very good, encouraging

Yes, the book is repetitive at points, but so what. The points are good to hear more than once.
Overall an excellent read/listen to.

3.5. Good, but repetitive.

I appreciated the points made, the studies done, and the encouragement I gained from this book. However, many thoughts and ideas are repeated throughout the book and that wore on me. I almost stopped it a couple of times because it was becoming laborious to listen. If you feel like you can wade through that, it’s worth the story. Otherwise, buy a used copy and highlight the “7 Secrets” and call it a day.
