About this listen

Since the death of his twin brother, Oliver’s caught between pleasing his fans and finding himself. Emery finds him first.

Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them - no support system - any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.

Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.

He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

Critic reviews

“Cherry dazzles with this deeply felt friends-to-lovers contemporary...with its uncommon depth, Cherry’s story will elicit tears in some places, laughter in others. A stellar cast…Readers will be hooked.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

I loved this book the first time I read it but re-reading with the audio really brought it to life.

Complex and exquisite love story

This was complex and exquisite love story complete with breaking generational curses, personal growth, and dealing with grief and loss. The dual narration was wonderfully done.

Could it be I’m Falling in Love

I have had this book in my #kindleunlimited library and my only regret is that I waited to read it. It is a great book with a storyline that will both break and then steal your heart. I devoured it in one sitting unable to put it down. And when I started tearing up I was too through!

If you listen to the audio complement you’ll be soothed but Shipley and ready to go to bat because of Cobb’s voice… and of course the excellent writing of Cherry!

Oh… definitely a good book club read that will draw out the pains of our past and present.

The biggest connection was lost

Urggggg! Okay so first off, I wasn’t impressed by the performance ONLY because the voices didn’t fit the characters in my imagination! Also, I caught a huge connection that was mentioned in the beginning and I waited patiently for the whole book for the reveal and it never came! If the dots were connected it would have made the story that much better! I won’t mention what it was exactly just in case no one else catches it! I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else! On a whole I think the story was good and if you can stay focused on the story and aren’t distracted by the acting,, I think you will really enjoy it!

Everyone Should Have A Mixtape

The Mixtape by Brittany Cherry
Narrated by Jordan Cobb & James Shippy

This story felt like it happened to a friend.
I had all the feels, I wanted to embrace the characters. Emery and Oliver made me want a grilled cheese sandwich.

There were some side characters I really liked and some I couldn’t stand…just like real life…. I guess someone has to be the villain…

There was depth and the characters were flushed out nicely, I wasn’t left wondering about anything.

The narration by Cobb and Shippy just added the cherry on top. They added texture to the words created by Brittany Cherry. A very enjoyable book with a HEA.

Amazing.

Some authors know how to tell a story. This book is an unforgettable story of unconditional love and the different ways some families support, encourage and love their children. The Mixtape is a different kind of love story, it’s written in such a different way that no matter how much I try to guess in what direction the author is taking, I couldn’t figure it out until I get to what the author says. It tackles depression, rape and some aspects of religion, the author writes said subjects with respect and dignity. My love for author Brittany Cherry’s books grow each time she publishes a new book. The Mixtape is totally addictive, I can’t stop thinking about this beautiful story and the awesome characters. Reese is my absolute favorite character in the story she adds so much joy to the book. Bravo! Brittany Cherry for another amazing book.
