Small town life, big academic egos, corruption, revenge, and Spam musubis! The Musubi Murder is the first campus crime novel set in Hawaii, and the perfect gift for mystery lovers, Hawaii expatriates, disillusioned academics, and anyone who fancies Spam (the meat). Renowned Hawaii-born voice-over artist Nicole Gose brings her spot-on vocal characterizations and impeccable comic timing to this reading.

There might have been a story in there somewhere, but I was lulled to sleep by the reader's pauses and voices.

Couldn't finish it

this story is based in Hawaii and that is fun but the characters get old fast.

some super cute moments but not nearly enough...

The Hawaiian back drop was the most interesting part of the story. The plot, however, was rather trite and boring. A little overplay with the pidgin; and I don't know any younger women in Hawaii who wear stockings, even college professors. The plot was slow and tedious, only to come to a rapid and with an unrealistic "confession" and a corny epilogue.l

Nice Try

This was a fun listen. Good mystery, very likable characters, and a terrific narrator.

I would recommended this to anyone looking for a light mystery with a healthy dose of humor.

Fun Listen!

I really wanted to like this book but it left me wanting. I felt like the murder mystery was more of a side note, and honestly not that much of a mystery anyway. The narrator did a pretty good job, but the story was just kind of blah.

Just ok.

Would you listen to The Musubi Murder again? Why?

I love Hawaii, and I love mysteries, so this was a perfect combination! The characters were interesting and witty- I would happily spend more time with them. There was little of the violence or sadism that pollutes a lot of mystery novels these days. The plot did not really hold up, but I was not disappointed- it was a thoroughly entertaining journey!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Musubi Murder?

Liked the trip to the exotic spa. The inside workings of the university were also very interesting.

How could the performance have been better?

Did not like the high-pitched squeal that passed for pidgin English in one of the main characters- I used to live in Hawaii, so it rankled.

Who was the most memorable character of The Musubi Murder and why?

Molly- quirky, articulate, a little complicated, and thoroughly charming.

Any additional comments?

Will look for other mysteries by Frankie Bow- hope they're all set in Hawaii!

Nice surprise

Initially intrigued by the tropical locale of the story and the post secondary academic setting, I was eager to listen to this previously unknown author and narrator. Now that I've finished, I find myself feeling flat. The story held my interest and the oration was varied and without background interference, but it was somewhat challenging to follow the characters and the exposition. I don't feel cheated, but I'm not likely to listen to this one again. Though I would try another by the author and narrator on the off chance that it's just an anomaly.

Muddled Murder

I enjoyed the story and the characters are endearing and interesting. I hope the author continues to use then, maybe making the main trio a bit of a citizens detective group. However, more development of the story and characters was needed and certain areas, and the story sometimes felt rushed or too linear without twists, which isn't great for a mystery novel. But I'd give it a listen (I enjoyed the performance and voices) and I hope the author continues to write more, preferably with the same characters I now love. :)

Edit: Looks like the author has several more books in the series that may not be out yet. Looking forward to them!

An engaging story, but development needed...

I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It was a nice cultural walk through Hawaii as well as a fun murder mystery. Although not a particularly fast moving "who done it," the characters more than made up for the laconic pace.

Enjoyable

If you could sum up The Musubi Murder in three words, what would they be?

Fun, humorous, intriguing

Would you recommend The Musubi Murder to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend this audio to those who like "cozy" mysteries and also to those who like things just a little bit darker.

What about Nicole Gose’s performance did you like?

The narrative was well done, in fact I often forgot that one woman was also providing the male voices for the audio. That's a great narrator!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's NOT a headless skull!

Any additional comments?

My only complaint with this audio is that there is at least a three second pause between each chapter...just long enough to make me wonder if it's stopped playing and just enough to be annoying.

Good solid mystery!
